International sector and asset type retrieval

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby bralim » Fri Dec 05, 2014 9:13 am

Hi Mark,
Now that all my holdings are in fund manager I am trying to work on categorization.
I wish to be able to categorize by sector, asset type and geographical exposure. It seems you cover the first two and I need to do the third on my own using investment goal (given I do not particularly care for the investment goal categorization anyway).
It would be nice to be able to download as much information as possible instead of manually inputting it. I have no issues for US funds and stocks (apart from mismatching symbols for which it would be nice not to have to toggle them and have different inputs in properties). However international stocks and funds are not available on morningstar.com but they are on morningstar.co.uk (not sure if in a downloadable format though). Is there any chance you could add support for morningstar.co.uk download?
Examples of symbols that are being problematic (amongst many others):
XESX:GR
1306:JP

Hi bralim,

I couldn't find either of those symbols on morningstar.co.uk? I suspect there are some securities listed on this server, not on morningstar.com. If so, we can consider adding support for retrieving asset/sector information from this server as well. I would suggest using your web browser, and seeing if you can't find the symbols on morningstar.com. They might use a different symbol than you're expecting. If you can't find them on morningstar.com, but you can find them on morningstar.co.uk, please give me a couple example symbols.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Sorry I left the bloomberg exchange extensions in the symbols.
The first one is here on the uk site:
http://www.morningstar.co.uk/uk/etf/sna ... 0P0000M68E
But indeed it is also present on the us site at:
http://etfs.morningstar.com/quote?t=MTAA%3aXESX

However, the second one is here on the uk site:
http://www.morningstar.co.uk/uk/etf/sna ... 0P0000A07H
But i cannot find it on the .com site.

I am and have been a premium user of both sites for quite a few years and my (non definitive) impression is that the .com site is geared towards us securities and perhaps a bit of europe, while the .co.uk site is a pretty much worldwide site where one can find securities listed on most world exchanges.
The fund i cannot find on the .com site is indeed an index fund on the topix (japan) listed in tokyo.
I think including the .co.uk site would be beneficial. I also think that using cusip/isin to find the securities on morningstar where available and if possible would help avoiding having to change symbols to download sector and asset type info. It seems to me the isin search is possible on the .co.uk site but not on the .com site.

Hi Bralim,

Thanks for the help/feedback. We can consider adding support for this new site. I do also like the idea of being able to specify a separate symbol/code for the asset/sector retrieval, independent of the symbol used for retrieving prices.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Just in case, here is another example:
http://www.morningstar.co.uk/uk/funds/s ... F00000SRPN
a UK fund I cannot find on .com.
Looking forward to seeing morningstar.co.uk added. Thank you.
Regards,
Paolo
