Equity cost when TXOUT, TXIN between accounts

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby -Andy- » Tue Jan 06, 2015 7:57 pm

I have US shares held in a Canadian dollar account, and that original purchase is easily entered by specifying the XRATE. However, a couple of years later I transferred them to another account, also in CAD$. I expect to use a TXOUT on one account and a TXIN on the other account to move the shares.
The only record on that month's brokerage statement is that 30 units entered the new account, with their total value as of that day. The total value is in CAD$.
Do I need to specify a unit price on the TXOUT and TXIN transactions? I couldn't calculate it from the CAD total since that arithmetic would give a different value than the shares actual US value. If I entered that, it would probably update the equity price history with an incorrect price on that day. Would I need to look up the historical value and exchange rate on that day?
Or is there a better method for doing this?
Thanks!
Andy

Hi Andy,

I assume these shares are still denominated in USD after the transfer? If so, just use the "Transfer Between" wizard. Right mouse click on the source investment, and select "Investment Data / Transfer Between...". That will record the transfer out and transfer in transactions. You're just going from a USD investment to another USD investment, so there is no need to deal with the exchange rate. The transfer wizard will record a single transfer out, plus one or more transfer in transactions (1 for each open lot at the time of the transfer). This will transfer all your shares, keeping the cost basis un-changed. No cash is used/generated.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark
I don't know all the features yet! At this point I'm creating the general csv import files to build my accounts from the original brokerage statements and was figuring out what type of transaction to include for that event.
It seems easier to leave inter-account transfers out of the first batch of imports, and then use the wizard later.
That brings up another question. If I skip the transfer, in many cases there will be a later transaction that's a sale of the equity. However the equity won't be in the account yet. Will that just leave a short position until the wizard is run for that date in the past, and the account will then be in balance again?
Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy,

Yes, that is correct. You don't have to actually record transactions in the order they happened, as long as you eventually do record all of them, everything will be correct once all transactions are recorded.
Thanks,
Mark
