Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager
by richard » Mon Aug 25, 2008 11:01 am
It seems that Yahoo has NOT updated their prices after the market closing (the US markets have been updated correctly).
There is a very good French server www.boursoram.com (owned by a major french bank) that has existed for a number of years and is quite stable. They list the complete French & European markets as near as I can tell for all sorts of financial instruments besides stocks (US also).
In terms of France & Luxembourg I know they are rather complete. Ive never had any problems with Spain, Germany, Amsterdam or London either.
One can either look up things by symbol or ISIN (which are internationally unique) number to get the quotes.
For example one can enter: BA or Boeing or US0970231058 (ISIN number) and get the quote. Likewise I can enter DE000CB3WAA2 to get a German Warrant (Yahoo doesn't cover that).
They seem to be much better then Yahoo.
Could you take a look to see if it's feasible to do something with them.

Hi Richard,
Is there a typo in the URL you provided? It seems to take you to some parked website.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the correction. I only read English, so could you point me on that website where you are going for the quotes that are missing from Yahoo?

Mark,
It's 8h30 AM Paris time and as near as I can tell Yahoo has not upgraded since 22 Aug their boards for France, London, Germany. They have upgraded for US, Amsterdam, Madrid (I can get the stock prices off of those boards as of their close on 25 August.
Further Bousrorama can be referenced by ISIN number (which is world wide unique), be it a US stock or European Stock.
If you look at their main page of their site you'll see a data entry area marked: "Code, Libellé ou Mot Clef", all you have to do is enter the ISIn number there. For example: LU0196696701 will get you to a HBSC tracker on Brazil based in Luxembourg, or US1491231015 -Caterpillar. Unfortunately in the case of the latter it doesn't appear to be that simple. European stocks don't seem to pose those ambiguities. I can reference Cintra (which does a lot of tol road business in the US) by either:
Cintra/Cin/ES0118900010.
It seems to work better for non US stocks.
If you would like we could have further discussion on this. I'll be on vacation in France for the first 3 weeks in September. You have my email and we could setup a Skype discussion to see if there is a better workable/alternative or secondary solution then Yahoo.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the help. I looked up LU0196696701 and ES0118900010. Each of these had a very different response, which makes it difficult to have one parsing routine to handle all types of quotes.
Another quote server that appears promising is www.quote.com. Are the investments you're interested in from Bousrorama available on quote.com?

Mark,
I can understand your parsing problem.
Quote.com appears to have what I need; the problem will be to find out all the new symbols (lol). I did a quick check on some French , German, Spanish and London stocks.
Having two possible resources is handy especially when one goes done, such as Yahoo.
It appears to me that Yahoo is still down this evening for France and Germany (they're still giving quotes for 22 August) and up for US, Amsterdam and Spain (the quotes are from 26 August). London is now back up, it wasn't when I posted this morning.
Could you do me a quick favor and and check to see if you get the same results I do, NONE?
bas.de (BASF)
brs.pa (Boursorama)
Thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the info on quote.com. This looks like a good server to add.
I did check those 2 symbols on Yahoo, and I see the same thing, the quotes are dated Aug 22...

Mark,
Another reason to have an alternative quote source that 's impossible to get the Yahoo people on the phone to tell them of their dysfunctional problems.
In both France and London I couldn't get beyond the switch board, when I called Customer "Care" in Ireland they said that they could do anything either, "wasn't their problem".
All they suggested is that I send an email, something that I already had done on the 22 Aug, and to which I never got a response.

Hi Richard,
Agreed, a backup is good... Did you try submitting an email through their "Help" link on their website? I've had good luck with them at least responding to this in the past.

Mark,
Email was submitted through there help link.
As of 4:30 PM their French and German sites are now back up. That might have something to do with the french switch board operator passing on a message this morning. They had not been up at noon. I think that she was a bit surprised at the fluency of my street french, she didn't seem to expect that from an American (lol).
>>Agreed, a backup is good...
I notice that you have Bloomberg in your list. Do they cover international stocks? If they do it might not be necessary to put Quote.com up. I do seem to remember in the past you did have them in your list. Would have a couple of non US symbols that I could try out?
Thanks,
Richard (who is not replying in street french)

Hi Richard,
Great, glad Yahoo is working now.
Yes, Bloomberg does offer a wide variety of international quotes. You can go to their website and do a symbol lookup for the specific ones you need. At the top/left of their pages is a toolbar where you can enter a symbol to get a quote, and there is also a link to "Symbol Lookup".
An example symbol is:
BRTO4:BZ
which is for "Brasil Telecom".

Mark,
Not sure what's working.
French company called GDF Suez (gaz.pa)
When I try and up date it from Yahoo. it doesn't. FM still reports value as of 22 Aug. When I checked on the Yahoo site, their value was as closing today (27 August). Other seem to work.
03929.pa (Bollare) is another one which doesn't seem to update correct, seems correct on Yahoo
OTOH other stocks in the portfolio do update correctly
?????

Hi Richard,
I just tested updating gaz.pa in Fund Manager using Yahoo. It updated correctly, for today's price. How are you verifying if the price was updated? Use the Data Register with the Prices data type, sorted by date.

Mark,
I don't understand, the two stocks I sited now update.
Believe me before sending my last email to I triple checked. The stocks were in a portfolio with 6 others, all but those two update. In this kind of a situation I rarely make mistakes. Look it now works, why remains a mystery.
Have a beer on me, that's about all I can say.
Over the next 3 weeks I'll be on vacation, at which point I'll take a close look at Bloomberg to see whether they can be a backup.
