Corrupt data in graphs in FM

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hello Mark,

I wonder if you or any reader could shed some light on data being corrupted.

Over the last month I have been getting more corrupt investment and portfolio files than I have had in over 10 years.

I don't get any errors when I close the portfolios or close FM.

When I then re-open the portfolios I get the msg that the files are of a older version and at no time can the files be fixed when I respond to upgrade to the latest version.

What is also weird is that the corrupted file size matches the file size of a uncorrupted last good file which I happen to have on a different drive. Some times the different drive would also have the corrupted file copied to it not knowing the files are corrupted then I have to go to a file a few days earlier and update the last few days.

In this example one would also see the 5177.8311 is a totally wrong NAV on the corrupted file with the many horizontal lines for BARCL_EAS.

This morning I happen to see a few very strange date formats and just as strange notes and that on a investment I never added any notes. Funny amounts of some notes.

I hope you can give some leads to prevent this.

Regards.

Hi fundman247,

Have you tried scanning your HD for errors? Unless you're opening files created with an earlier version of FM, you shouldn't ever get that message about an old file format. The file format version number is stored in the header of the file. The file may be staying the same size, but if certain bits are getting corrupted/changed that will cause un-expected behavior.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

My HD scans shows no errors and as I open and close over 100 non FM files daily I am only getting this error only with FM files. As the files giving the old format error are used every day I know they are of the latest format. No instruments opened that are not used every day. Also strange that I sometimes get an error with the portfolio .mm4 files.

With the funny dates and amounts for A-jse-gold I elected not to save the investments or portfolio not to save a corrupt file when I closed FM. When I reopened the same portfolio with the A-jse-gold investment there was no trace of any error. Also the notes on this file were before 2009 and not within the date range 23-06-2015 to 17-07-2015 I used for the report.

As I have over 200 instruments open in most portfolios I never get more than about 3 instruments becoming corrupt.

I will be using a different HD on the PC as I have different partitions and save all the investments and portfolios on this other partition and see if things improve.

Very funny things taking place.

Regards.

Hi fundman247,

I'm not sure. If you get different results from opening the same file at different times, this is rather strange. If the new HD doesn't improve things you can email me a sample file that is showing the error, and I can take a look here.
Thanks,
Mark
