Portfolio Disappearance

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby johnreid » Fri Oct 31, 2008 6:36 pm

I opened Fund Manager in the usual way today and found to my suprise that my wife's portfolio had disappeared from the list of portfolios (.mm4). I was able to find the back up, and after clicking on it, the portfolio reappeared, but without any content. When I saved that portfolio directly (File -> Save, etc) and then expected it to be saved automatically in the usual way. Then I closed down FM and restarted it, but the portfolio did not appear in the usual location.

I gather that my choice is to manually restock the portfolio from the data files. But is there another way to do this? I had thought that when the automatic backup was on that the portfolio was saved with its individual stocks but this does not appear to be the case.

Hi John,

It sounds like you are using the older 8.x auto-backup? This can be confusing to restore, but in that case you would need to first copy the portfolio file back to its original location. You do this in Windows Explorer, outside of Fund Manager. By opening it from within the autoback area inside Fund Manager that portfolio file will not be able to find its investment files, as they are renamed in the autoback folder to include the sub-portfolios in the name.

If you still have the original, un-modified/un-saved portfolio file in your auto-back area, you can still copy it out of there, into your regular data folder, and then open it from there. However, if you opened it, had errors, and then saved it, it may no longer contain the references to your investments, and you'd have to re-create it.

The new 9.x backup/restore has been greatly improved, to help eliminate this confusion, and making restoring easier. You can now restore from within Fund Manager.
Thanks,
Mark
