Hiding Sold Investments

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi, Mark,

The help file says that selecting the date range for a portfolio will apply that date range to all sub-portfolios. Not on my system. I select 12/31/07 and 12/31/07 to hide any investments that were not owned, supposedly by anybody, at the end of 1987. When I run a report for 2008 no investments sold during 2008 will appear unless I elect to show hidden investments. Then, the date range notwithstanding, I get everything. The report in question included investments that were sold in 2006. So either (1) I have no clue how hiding sold investments really works, (2) or it doesn't work.

On a related matter, I have a sub-portfolio that only shows current holdings if the election is made to show hidden investments. If hidden investments are not to be showed only the money market investment is shown.

Hi Mike,

I assume you meant 2007 and not 1987?

If you run the "File / File Operations / Hide Sold Investments" command and specify the starting/ending dates as both 12/31/07, then any investment that you did not own on 12/31/07 will be marked as hidden. This would include investments that you didn't buy until after 12/31/07.

What are you trying to achieve? Do you want to see a report that has only investments owned at any time during 2008? If so, run the "Hide Sold Investments" command with these settings:

Date Range: 1/1/08 - 12/31/08
Turn ON the option: "Un-Hide Non-Sold Investments"

This will have the effect of hiding everything that didn't own any shares throughout 2008. All other investments will have their hidden property turned off. Notice, that if you don't turn on the "Un-Hide Non-Sold Investments" this command will only ever turn on the hidden attribute. In order to have it un-hide investments already marked as hidden, you must turn on this option.

On your related matter, it sounds as if all your investments are marked as hidden. There are a variety of ways to see if your investments are marked as hidden. An easy way to look at many of your investments is to use the Portfolio Editor, and turn on the "Hidden" column under "View / List Columns...".
Thanks,
Mark
