Morningstar access via Web News

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby Wayne McCracken 1 » Tue Oct 05, 2021 8:34 am

I searched a bit but don't see where anyone has brought up this topic. I apologize if it has been posted before.

Rather than have Web News go to the default Yahoo site for the stock, I'd prefer to have it access the Morningstar page covering the stock. The "News" on Yahoo is pretty useless at this point.

The issue is that the URL for Morningstar pages also includes the exchange that the stock is listed on "https://www.morningstar.com/stocks/xnys/hbi/quote"

I know that the ticker (hbi in this case) can be substituted by <symb> but since no wild card seems to be allowed by Morningstar to substitute for the exchange I can't see how to do this. Is there another way that others have done this?

Hi Wayne McCrackent 1,

You could use something like this:

https://www.morningstar.com/<desc>/quote

and for the investment's "description" property fill in:

stocks/xnys/hbi

Ideally, you could also use:

https://www.morningstar.com/<desc>/<symb>/quote

with a description of:

stocks/xnys

but I see there is a bug in the substitution algorithm for this case, which we will get fixed.
Thanks,
Mark

I see what you mean. I used "https://www.morningstar.com<desc>/<symb>/quote" with the description "/etfs/arcx" and with VDE as the symbol I got this: "https://www.morningstar.com/etfs/arcx/<symb>/quote". As you can see the ticker symbol didn't get substituted.

You say you are fixing this? Could you let me know when you have had a chance to do that?

Thanks for being as responsive to questions as usual.

Hi Wayne,

It has been fixed in the codebase, so the next version release will have it. You're on our mailing list, so when that comes out you will be notified.
Thanks,
Mark

Any idea when that might happen?

There is no set date for the next release. If you'd like, send me an email, and I'll see about trying to get you a pre-release you can use with this fix.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks for the offer Mark.

I realized today however that to do what you suggested, since some investments are stocks, some are ETFs and some are on different exchanges, I would have to edit the description custom for every stock and ETF individually.

So alternatively I can simply add all of that as the description at one time for each by copying and pasting from the Morningstar page URL for each investment.

A bit brute force-ish but it works and eventually I'll get the ones I want working correctly.
