Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby scottnewbie » Mon Aug 10, 2009 1:06 pm

I'm a newbie using fund manager and have missed something simple about updating the prices of the holdings within my portfolio. Initially I got the historical prices from Yahoo by putting in the dates of my holdings from the date of purchase until the present date (now past) in the date boxes. Now how do I update from that date til the present? Obviously I don't want to overwrite the long price history I already have in my data--I just want to update the files with the price data that is missing.

Thanks

Hi scottnewbie,

If you update daily, you can just use a regular daily quote server like "Yahoo". If however, you don't update daily, and want to get the last so many days worth of quotes, then you need to use a historical quote server, like "Yahoo (Historical)". You choose the default daily and historical quote servers under "Options / Internet Settings...". Yahoo is a good choice for the daily server, and Yahoo (Historical) is a good choice for the historical server.

Once you have the servers set you want, then use "Edit / Internet Retrieve / Prices or Historical Prices". You can also use the "PRC" (blue up arrow) or "HST" (yellow up arrow) buttons on the toolbar. If you use the historical retrieve, you will be prompted for the date range to retrieve.
Thanks,
Mark

Today is 11Aug09

Ok, wrt the prompt for dates, if I need updates only for the last 7 days then I put 4Aug09 till 11Aug09?

And this step will append this new historical data (4-11Aug) to my existing files (which go a long way back), not overwrite the existing files with 4-11Aug09 data only?

Thanks

Hi scottnewbie,

Yes, you are correct. Retrieving prices only adds (or replaces if the dates overlap) to your existing prices. It does not remove any prices. You will have all the earlier retrieved prices, plus the ones you retrieve now.
Thanks,
