Bond price retrieval

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby fmtg01 » Sun Feb 28, 2010 12:45 pm

Just starting out with Fund Manager and learning the way through data retrieval. Have set up individual bonds to retrieve prices using FINRA server. I find the individual bond prices seem to be retrieved as the last actual transaction in the bond ..which often can be 1-2 years old. Comparing to bond values used in Quicken and Schwab (model based). I found for example CUSIP # 602366GB6 that my retrieval from FINRA is showing a price of 101.408 which indeed was the last actual transaction in the bond (per emma.msrb.org) but that trade took place almost two years ago (3-31-2008) . Quicken and Schwab current pricing shown are both at 105.261 which is likely a much better approximation of the value of the bond.
My question is -is there a way that I can download the Schwab pricing as part of my Schwab download?- I noted a post on the forum which implies that -it was a thank you! --but I haven't figured out how to yet. Appreciate any help -- at worst, I'll enter by hand I guess. Thank you for any help you can give.

Hi fmtg01,

Whenever you retrieve transactions Fund Manager will update prices for you as well. This happens automatically. Make sure you are using version 10.4 or later. Fund Manager reads any available prices from the OFX server of your broker. If you retrieve transactions and there are none, you can still press "Finish" to update just the prices. Have you tried retrieving transactions and see if your bond price gets updated? If it doesn't, the price may not be coming down from Schwab for some reason. You can take a closer look, by looking at the log files after a transaction retrieve. Look in the "Xmldump.txt" log file, and look for the "INVPOSLIST" section. For each position, you should see a "INVPOS" section, and a "UNIQUEID" and "UNITPRICE". See if you see your bond pricing as you expect. For help finding the log files, see the bottom of this page:

Thanks for the very rapid reply ! First, I realized that I was using 10.3 Prof instead of 10.4 so I updated. I then retrieved the data -looked at the log files and indeed the correct prices were there. It's a little hard to confirm the full follow through on the weekend but it looks like it is now working. I'll verify during the week but I don't expect any issues - Thanks for the directions!
