Dividend reinvestment

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby AIM » Tue Jul 27, 2010 5:10 pm

Hi,
Is there a difference (e.g. performance) if reinvested shares are recorded as purchases or reinvestments? Stock reinvested dividends retrieved from TD Ameritrade and Mutual Fund shares reinvested imported from Scottrade both show up as purchases and only mention reinvestment in the memo field.
I had never noticed before, but now when performing a long overdue reconciliation on the TD Ameritrade account I entered the reinvested dividends as purchases. What is the effect of changing them vs. leaving as is? This led me to notice the Scottrade import that was treating it this way (purchases) all along. Thanks.

Hi David,

These two are equivalent in terms of performance:

Purchase + Distributed Distribution (2 transactions)

Reinvested Distribution

However, you cannot just record a purchase, you should also have the corresponding distribution (not reinvested).
Thanks,
Mark
