Historic data

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby Arjan » Sun Sep 12, 2010 8:52 pm

Hi,
I have downloaded a trial version of the pro 10.7 and have uploaded all my brokerage accounts in it, when I look at the value graphs for the accounts that have high turnover rates they appear way to course compared to the accounts that have had minimal turnover . If I try to run a graph of the stock price for one of the recently sold securities there are very few data points and it appears that the historical data for the closed investments was not loaded.
I have tried different servers with no difference. When I try to import historical data for one of the sold securities I get an error "could not update any investments"
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Arjan Bok

Hello Arjan,

When you retrieve transactions from your broker, this does not retrieve historical pricing too. You must do that separately, using one of the historical quote servers, like Yahoo (Historical). When retrieving prices, they are retrieved by the symbol of your investments. Please make sure you have the symbol recorded properly, and this symbol is available on the quote server you're using. You can find a list of all the quote servers, and links to each one here:

If you can view historical pricing with your web browser for a symbol, then you should be able to retrieve that historical pricing in Fund Manager.

To verify what pricing data you have recorded for any investment, use the Data Register (Edit / All Data...) with the "Prices" data type selected.

For more tips on retrieving prices, please read:

Thanks,

Thanks for getting back so quickly,

I am aware that I need to download historical data and I have tried to do so using Google, MSN and Yahoo historical servers. Only the currently active investments appear to be updated. I use a lot of small caps and I just went to the Yahoo and Google sites to look for ROIAK and NNBR they both showed historical data going back years.
If I right click on the ROIAK symbol in one of my portfolios and select to retrieve historical prices It does not update but instead I get an error message "could not update any investments"

Mark,
After trying some more possibilities I found that if I go into the properties of the inactive investment the "retrieve prices" check box is not checked and when I do click on that it will update the data just fine.
Is there a way to set this globally so that I don't have to go over a hundred or more securities and do this one by one?

Thanks,
Arjan

Hi Arjan,

Glad you found that option. This option can be adjusted either individually or in bulk. Individually, it is done under "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve". You can do it in bulk under "File / File Operations / Hide Sold Investments...". Maybe this is how they got turned off in the first place?

Note, the 2 options to turn on/off price retrieve for non-sold/sold investments. You define what is sold by setting the date range in this dialog. Anything that owned shares anytime during this period will be considered non-sold.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark,

This did the trick and you are correct, I did use that function to hide the sold securities.
