Responding properly to Quicken date shortcuts

Comments, critical feedback, praise, or suggestions for new features.

Mark, I really like the use of Quicken shortcut keys to enter dates (M and H for beginning and end of month, etc.). I like it so much that I've put it into software that I sell myself (totally different type of software).

However, I've noticed that FM doesn't respond quite the same to date movement due to the shortcut keys as it does to other date movement. For instance, when I'm entering a transaction (Buy/Sell, Distribution, etc.), the price changes automatically if I use +/- in the date field, to reflect the closing price on that date. But the price doesn't change if I use the shortcut keys. It doesn't seem to me like that should be overly difficult to do.

A second issue that isn't related to dates, but appears on the same input screen: I wish it were possible to limit the number of decimal digits for shares that are calculated when entering purchases and similar transactions. Right now, if a price is displayed and I enter a dollar value, the number of shares is calculated with 6 places to the right of the decimal point. But all of my accounts only record to 3 places, meaning that every time I have to edit the number of shares (at which time the price automatically gets altered to show 6 places).

I would like to be able to tell FM that share values should always be rounded to 3 places, dollar values of transactions to 2 places, and the prices field would have the greater precision needed to match them up. (So if there's a price already filled in when entering a purchase/sale, and I enter a dollar amount, FM would calculate the number of shares rounded to 3 places using that price, then recalculate the price to 6 places using the rounded number of shares.) This would save a lot of time while entering purchases and reinvestments. Presumably you'd want to allow people to specify how many digits to allow; it might even be desirable to be able to change that by investment, as I think I used to have one brokerage that would show share amounts to 4 places.

Hi Kelvin,

I see the same problem with the date shortcuts. Thanks for pointing out that problem, that wasn't the intention.

On the shares rounding issue, that is an interesting idea. Currently, we recommend recording value, then shares, so the price rounds. This is described here:

We'll give this approach some consideration.
Thanks,
Mark
