Exchange rate updates

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Beagle47 » Thu Nov 11, 2010 3:51 pm

Hi - I'm currently trialling Fund Manager and am new to this forum.

I use exchange rates only to adjust to my default currency (reporting US shares in AUD). I have imported historical rates and this mostly works well.

My problem is with updating the exchange rate. To save time (and space) I have the default setting of only updating prices for stocks with non-zero balances. As the exchange rate is always zero it doesn't update - at least I assume this is why it doesn't update. Other than updating prices on 'sold' investments is there something I'm missing?

Thanks ....... Alan

There is a further twist I hadn't noticed.

I have 2 portfolios - both with an 'exchange rates' sub-portfolio and both containing AUDUSD=X. In one portfolio the exchange rate is updating while in the other it is not. Seems likely then its in my setting up.

And maybe I've fixed it. I've deleted the exchange rate that wasn't working and copied the one that was working (from the other portfolio) into its place. I'll know tomorrow when I do an update.

Hi Alan,

I think you are referring to the use of the "File / File Operations / Hide Sold Investments..." dialog? In that dialog you can turn off price retrieve for investments you no longer own. Running that command will adjust the price retrieve option (and the hidden attribute) at that time, based on the settings you provide in that dialog. However, you can modify the investments later by going to "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve" and specifically turning on the option to retrieve prices for that investment.

If you plan to run the "Hide Sold Investments" command frequently, you may want to consider organizing your sub-portfolios something like this:

Code: Select all
Master Portfolio
  - Holdings
    - Acct 1
    - Acct 2
    - ....
  - Exchange Rates

You can then put your exchange rate investment inside "Exchange Rates", and when you run the "Hide Sold Investments" dialog, you can choose to have it operate on the "Holdings" sub-portfolio, which will not include your exchange rates.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark. That's nailed it.

1. I created a new 'master' portfolio
2. Copied my original portfolios (including their sub-portfolios) into the new
'master' as sub-portfolios.
3. Copied/pasted the 'exchange rates' sub-portfolio from one of
the sub-sub-portfolios to being a sub-portfolio of the 'master'
4. Deleted the original 'exchange rates' sub-portfolios
4. Updated the currency options

All seems to be working well. I'll wait a few days before deleting my original separate portfolios just in case but there doesn't seem to be an issue with doing that.

Thanks again ....... Alan
