Viewing all data from multiple accounts

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Helping my father, a just-retired broker, get started with the software, so bear with me.

The main thing I was hoping your software could do was allow him to easily download all of his transactions from separate online accounts (which I can see so far that I can do), view his transactions and holdings "by account" (which I can also see I can do), and then--and here is where I am having trouble--let him see all of his transactions and holdings together (i.e. view his holdings as one big mass--"by all accounts"--, or, for that matter, as any combination of accounts he chooses). He wants to know how much of a particular position he owns across several accounts. So, when he views/sorts active positions by name, there are as many line items (records) for the position as there are accounts he holds the position.

If I set up sub-portfolios for all of his accounts, then it seems the Portfolio Editor window only shows transaction records/holdings from one Portfolio at a time. I know I could drag and drop records manually into a single Portfolio, but that's time-prohbitive and too prone to human error, given how many accounts we are talking about. It seems like I accidentally did what I wanted without drag and drop (because I saw items from more than one account in a single portfolio, verified by customizing the Portfolio Editor view to include the Account # field), but I'm not sure how I did this and can't seem to get it to happen again!

Anyway, I can't tell whether Fund Manager can display records from multiple portfolio databases at the same time. Perhaps you are relying on reports to do that? I have not experimented much with those yet. How can I set things up so that I can view all the records, from one portfolio and all of its sub-portfolios, at the same time?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Marc,

You would do this in a report. The Portfolio Editor only displays the immediate contents of the currently selected sub-portfolio. You would set up your sub-portfolios, one per account, and then report on the top level sub-portfolio which includes all of these sub-portfolios. To see the sum of your holdings at the top level, create a report for the top level sub-portfolio, and turn off subtotals and "list by" symbol. If you experiment with the report settings I think you'll see how this works.
Thanks,
Mark

Well, the problem I see is that, assuming I want to format a given report such that all holdings from all subportfolios are lumped together (i.e. not broken out by portfolio and subtotaled), there is no way in the to see which holding is from which account. For example, the "Account #" field is not included in any report.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
