Clarification as to maximum number of investments.

According to the FAQ posted to this site, the personal version of FM is limited to 500 investments PER PORTFOLIO and the user may have an UNLIMITED number of portfolios.

My question is, what constitutes a 'portfolio'? Are the maximum number of investments counted on the basis of top level portfolios, or on each sub-portfolio? Can a user have 500 investments in each top level portfolio, as the FM website seems to imply?

This 500 limit is per portfolio file (*.mm4). It includes all sub-portfolios. So, basically you can only have 500 total open at any one time. You are allowed to have as many portfolio files (*.mm4) as you want, but they are each completely independent. It is usually best to just have a single portfolio file, and use sub-portfolios to organize all your accounts. This way, you only have to update prices once, and can report on all your holdings combined, or on any sub-portfolio without having to open a different portfolio file to find your account.

If you are in the Portfolio Editor window, right mouse click on your top-most sub-portfolio, and choose "Properties...". It will display how many total investments you have open now. This is the number that is limited to 500 in the Personal version.

Thanks again for the prompt reply.

The reason that I asked this question is that my primary interest in fund manager is to have a way to control portfolio balancing and, as far as I know, FM only has two categories for this purpose.

For example, I would like to balance portfolios by sector, market capitalization, income classification (hi, med, lo, no), and geography (US, Canada, Asia, etc.)

I don't expect to have more than 500 investments, but I may have to duplicate portfolios to control allocations.

What would really be nice would be to have more than two categories.

Using extra portfolio files will not help here. The 2 sets of category labels are global. They aren't memorized in the portfolio file.
