cash default account & distributed dividends

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby michael » Thu Jun 30, 2011 11:41 am

Hi Mark,

I have investments whose dividends were recorded under a different cash default account. I changed the cash default account in the portfolio's properties and edited the dates of the dividend transactions in the individual investments. After I change the transaction date, the transaction links to the default cash account and the funds flow into this new cash default account.

However, one or two investments are giving me problems. The dividends are showing in the investment's data register andon the distribution summary. When I look in the data register for all transactions in the cash default account, the amount of these particular dividends is not showing up as a purchase. I can't get the distributed dividends on these two investments to flow into the cash default account. But when I delete the dividend transaction, my cash default account is reduced. It only happens with two investments.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Since when you delete the dividend in the investment, the cash decreases, this makes me suspect the cash side of the transaction really is recorded. Are you maybe not sorting the Data Register by "Date", so you don't see it where you expect?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I discovered the Investment Transaction report's option (thank you to your message board) to include only external transactions. The dividends recorded that never hit the cash side were displayed in the report. After I changed the date, the dividends hit the new cash default account that I had selected. (The dividends had been retrieved originally without a cash default account.)

That's a very useful report! I still don't know why I was having trouble yesterday, as I sorted on date and amount. But it's working now and going forward this report will make it a lot easier for me to tie out my transactions for prior years.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Mark,

Actually, even using this report, I had some trouble getting a few of the dividend transactions into the cash side. But, I eventually got them to flow through.

Most would flow through if I just changed the date on the originally retrieved transaction. For example, if the original date of the dividend was 6/30, I would change it to 6/29 (and I'd also change the other field too so that it was before 6/29) and that usually would get the transaction into the cash default and off the external transaction report.

But a few were more problematic. It was if my changing the date didn't register and so an edited transaction related to the new cash default account didn't supersede the original transaction. I played around, changing the transaction from dividend to interest, deleting the retrieved memo in the memo field, etc. Eventually I changed the date to the beginning of the month and that seemed to get recognized and the transaction went into the cash default account.

Coincidentally, sometimes when I'm entering or editing a buy or sell and I enter the two fields, i.e. price and # of shares, the third field doesn't fill in. Eventually I get it to take, but I'm wondering if there could be a common thread between the two issues.

But all is well. Thanks Mark.

Hi Michael,

I'm not sure if these two issues could be related or not. If a transaction has the same amount and on the same date as the corresponding default cash account, this should be all that is required for it to match up. This may be difficult to debug over the message board, so if you're still having problems, please give us a call at the office, and we can connect into your computer, and see if we can't figure out the issue.
Thanks,
Mark
