Vanguard retrieve: Same account, 3 components: A, B & C

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Maury56 » Fri Jul 08, 2011 5:02 pm

I am a new user trying to set up my FM Pro software and portfolio.
I have a Vanguard account which has several components. There is the Portfolion of Maury56 which consists of 2 subaccounts: (A) IRA with Vanguard Funds and (B) IRA Brokerage Account with stocks, mutual funds and ETFs. Then there is the Portfolio of Maury56 + wife. This just has a (C) Joint Brokerage account with stocks, MFs, and ETFs.
When I downloaded from Vanguard (using my top overall brokerage account number, which is not the brokerage account # of the two subaccounts), I only got data for (B) above. (A) and (C) did not come through.
My FM set up is just Master Portfolio with Vanguard sub to that.
HELP - how to I get my stuff out of Vanguard and into proper corresponding folders in FM?
Thanks, Maury56

Hi Maury56,

You will need to set up 3 sub-portfolio, one for each of these accounts. You can then group them however you want. For example, you may do something like this:
Code: Select all
- Master Portfolio
  - Vanguard Holdings
    - IRA Funds
    - IRA Brokerage
    - Joint Brokerage

You would have an account number assigned at each of the 3 lowest level sub-portfolios. You can use the "New Portfolio Wizard" to set up all 3 of these sub-portfolios, and then organize them into any hierarchy you want, using the Portfolio Editor window. You will need to walk through the new portfolio wizard 3 times, once for each account, and enter the different account number each time.
Thanks,
Mark

Thank you. Another question. I have already downloaded data and it is for the (B) account but it was downloaded at the VANGUARD level. Now if I make a (B) subaccount, when I download ot it, will it dulpicate the data? How do I move all this VANGUARD level into a (B) subaccount.?

Hi Maury56,

You can just rename the sub-portfolio from VANGUARD to IRA Broker. Do this in the Portfolio Editor window. Right mouse click on the sub-portfolio, and choose "Properties...". Rename it here.

Retrieve your other 2 accounts, and then you'll have 3 sub-portfolios under Master Portfolio. Next, right mouse click on Master Portfolio, and choose "New Sub-Portfolio..." and create the Vanguard Holdings sub-portfolio. Select the 3 account sub-portfolios from the right side of the Portfolio Editor window, and drag/drop them onto this Vanguard Holdings sub-portfolio, moving them into this sub-portfolio.

The Portfolio Editor window works a lot like Windows Explorer does with managing files/folders. You can drag/drop, rename, whatever you need to do to organize your sub-portfolios. You might like to watch the tutorial on the Portfolio Editor window:
