General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.
by martin62 » Sun Sep 11, 2011 8:02 am
Hi, I have read some of the subjects on this forum about preventing the daily change % to go to 0 after midnight.
I also find this an issue, so I would like to suggest an enhancement to Fund Manager that would help with this and in my opinion make the program better.
My suggestion is to have an option to select the viewed date when viewing a portfolio i.e either select the viewed date by a calendar or preferrably select it via an upwards and downward arrow that alters the viewed date. This would allow changes in portfolio value to be viewed by changing the date, useful when checking daily changes over the previous week.
Thanks.
Martin

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the feedback. I believe you are referring to setting the viewing date for the Portfolio Editor window? The Portfolio Editor window is meant to be a quick view into your data, and for organizing your accounts. As you mention, it is displaying data for the current date. For more flexibility in seeing figures, you can use "Reports". You can look at a report for any date you want. So, for example, if you want to see the % Change from yesterday to the day before yesterday, create a Custom report with the field "Percentage change in value from previous" and set the ending report date to yesterday. You can leave reports open in your portfolio file, so the same reports automatically come up each time you start Fund Manager. You can also memorize reports if you have certain things you like to look at.

Hi Martin,
I'm presuming by your post count that you're relatively new to Fund Manager.
You might not know that FM's reports are very different than, say, the reports in Quicken. FM reports, when displayed on the screen and before they're printed, are actually "intelligent". You can drill down on line items for further detail. The level of detail available is one of the strong points of FM. Custom reports, which can be memorized and recalled for future use, allows a great deal of flexibility.
Hope this helps.

Mark,
I have a customized (Memorized) Portfolio Value Report with Float Date and Starting Date Relative to End Date checked. I set Start Date and End Date to the same date which shows changes for that date. If I close the report prior to exiting FM, the next time I run FM and open the report everything is perfect with Start Date and End Date set to the current date.
However, I like to leave the report always open so it is available for the next day. When I exit FM and run it the next day, the End Date is set to the new current date but Start Date is still set to yesterday/previous run date.
I edit the report each day to set Start Date to the current date. Ideally, I would like to see Start Date automatically set to the current date as End Date is set. For manually, changing the Start Date it would be nice to add an entry to the drop-down Date Settings: Period: named something like Current Date that sets both Start Date and End Date to the current date.
Thanks, Ernest

Hi Ernest,
Memorized reports and portfolio saved reports have independent start/end relative date settings. For the portfolio saved reports, see "Options / Report Preferences... / General / Portfolios", and turn on "Start Date Relative To End".
Thanks for the idea on adding a new pre-defined selection of "Current Date". I can see that being useful.
