Help with the Portfolio Editor during evaluation

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby SHosier » Thu Oct 20, 2011 7:25 pm

I'm in the eval period and kind of like what I see but am lost as to how to use this program. My wife and I have about 8-9 different portfolios between us each with dozens of investments in each. Excel just isn't working anymore. One problem, and I suspect a rudimentary one is, I can't figure out how to display only the active positions. 25-30 closed positions just gums things up. Yes, I need to keep that historical record of buys and sells but I don't want everything displayed every time I open the program up. Is there some place to get a manual for this program or something other than online help, which really isn't very helpful?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve, fellow user here.

The Portfolio Editor shows all open investments that are not "hidden." You can mark all zero-balance investment "hidden" by going to File -> File Operations -> Hide Sold Investments.

You'll want to set the date range to just one date (today through today), and leave all boxes checked. Keep in mind, if you decide to re-purchase any of these investments (or sell out of additional ones), you'll need to re-run this file operation.

Alternatively, if you don't want to go to all this trouble, you can simply customize your reports to only show non-zero-balance investments. You can change this report behavior by opening a report, clicking Options -> Report Preferences -> General. You'll see a dropdown list for "Do Not Display Investments with Zero Share Balance." This does NOT affect the Portfolio Editor (only reports), but I personally don't mind that the Editor is slightly cluttered, since I do all my data absorption through reports. :)

Hi Steve,

In addition to the online help we offer a variety of tutorials, which are often an easier way to learn to use the program than with the online help. The online help is more of a reference manual. All of the available tutorials are listed here:
