Can I clone a sub-portfolio?

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi Mark,
My wife and I each have individual ISA accounts (an ISA is a tax exempt savings account in the UK). They are identical in every respect except for the amounts invested in each mutual fund. So, the funds are identical and the transaction dates too.

Having set up one of these ISA accounts as a sub-portfolio can I copy it in Portfolio Editor and paste it within the same master portfolio to create the second account? Then I would just need to edit the purchase transactions in each security to reflect the correct quantities purchased. Or would that mess things up in terms of .dat files etc? Please let me know how to achieve this or whatever alternative method you would recommend.

As I uploaded the first sub-portfolio using a csv file I do also have the option of editing that and then uploading it into the new sub-portfolio if you think that is safer/easier?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

You would not want to use copy/paste in the Portfolio Editor in this case. Copying/pasting investments makes another copy of the same investment file (*.dat). So, whenever you edited one, you would see the updated information in both.

You could go onto your hard drive, and make copies of the *.dat investment files, and then create a new sub-portfolio in the Portfolio Editor and open these new *.dat investment files into this new sub-portfolio. This way you would have separate investment files in each sub-portfolio.

You could also modify your CSV file, and import again into a 2nd sub-portfolio.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks. I just wanted to be sure I was not missing some functionality available to select in the menus. I think the easiest option for me is to edit the csv file.
