^DJI and Yahoo issue

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby saccenti » Tue Sep 14, 2010 4:19 pm

For a week now, the Dow (^DJI) has not been updating in my daily download.
Here is a lead on the problem:
http://ketterernet.com/Downloads/tabid/109/Default.aspx

Yahoo has stopped supporting the ^DJI for downloads. The workaround (INDU) has been deactivated as of today, best I can tell.

This is a severe limitation. Can you suggest/implement a workaround? Can we use an alternate server for updates besides Yahoo, if they are going to stick to this?

Hi saccenti,

Thanks for the link. Indeed, Yahoo has stopped providing this quote in their normal "Download Data" link. If you go to this page:

http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=^DJI

You can see there is no longer a "Download Data" link, like there is on any other quote page. Interestingly enough, you can still get historical data from Yahoo on the ^DJI, but just not a current day quote.

There are workarounds for this problem:

1) Use "Yahoo (Historical)" instead.

2) Use a different quote server, like Bloomberg. The symbol for the Dow Jones on Bloomberg is:

INDU:IND

which is retrieving fine.

To override the default quote server for a specific investment, go to "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve".
Thanks,
Mark

I encountered the same issue with this index and glad that Saccenti posted it and you Mark, provided the work around.
Actually, it answered another question I had, but had not yet put it to a test; and that is, can I assign different quote servers to investments.
Found out I can.....learn something everyday.

PS Love your software!

Glad I found this post!

Yahoo seems to have dropped S&P500 Index also as of 9/17 - graph was straight horizontal line since.

Easiest fix as said seems to be to use Yahoo historic for all including current.

Wonder why Yahoo changed this.

I took me awhile to find the setting to hep others more precise:
Edit/Internet Retrieve/Settings

davephx,
I don't experiance the issue with the S&P500 index, Yahoo ticker ^GSPC, you have. My settings are the Yahoo "default servers".
What could have happened is that the price retrieve box was not ticked.
Try resetting to the "default servers" and make sure the price retieve box is ticked and do a quote and historical price update and see if it will update.

To do the retrieve settings for a single investment or index, go to the Portfolio Editor, right click on the investment/index and go to Properties>Internet retrieve and check or change the settings.

Well for some reason I was using ^SPX
for the S&P500 index and it stopped updating about the same time it seems as Dow stopped.

Have changed it to your symbol will have to wait till Monday to test since already updated all from yahoo historical. But if you update every day faster I believe to just to update.

I like that you can change source by symbol for server.
