: There is discrepancy between the gain amounts provided by my broker Legg Mason Wood Walker (LM) and the gain reported in Fund Manager (FM). The difference occurs because of the way Cost is interpreted. Cost for LM is the sum of all the purchases + reinvested distributions. Gain is therefore Sum of all Purchase Costs including reinvested distributions. You do not include reinvested distributions in your costs. Why?

Hi Art,

We have both types of cost calculations, and they are for different
purposes. For cost basis for tax purposes we
do include reinvested distributions in the cost. For the "Out of Pocket"
types of cost we do not include them because they didn't come out of your
pocket.

Thanks,
Mark
