: Hi Mark!

: I was attempting a Historical Price Retrieval for stocks for which I had imported QIF transactions from MS Money 2003 for this one portfolio of mine. This portfolio was started on 11/13/2002, and there’s been a fair amount of buy and sell transactions between then and now. So I asked FM to do a historical retrieval from 11/13/2002 to 09//23/2005.

: As FM set out to do this, and it was taking a goodly amount of time, I wondered: does FM know enough to not bother retrieving prices for stocks during the periods they were NOT in my portfolio? For example, between 11/13/2002 and 09/23/2005, I had an open long position in LQI (La Quinta Inns) in this portfolio for the brief period 3/21/2003 to 4/7/2003. That’s just 17 calendar days, in a total retrieval period of 1,045 days.

: So when I tell FM to go get historical prices for LQI, is it intelligent enough to just retrieve prices for the 17-day span it was in the portfolio, and not the entire 1,045 days in the retrieval period?

: -Mike.

Hi Mike,

No, Fund Manager wouldn't retrieve as you've described, and as you probably observed. I believe people often like to have historical pricing for all periods, even when they don't own it. This helps make the graphing more useful.

There is a feature that somewhat relates to this... If you have an investment that you no longer own, and don't want it to be updated you can turn off the option "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve / Update Price", and it won't be retrieved for any price retrieves.

Another tip: Say you create a new investment, and only want historical prices for that one investment, you can right mouse click on that investment (or a group of selected investments) and choose "Retrieve Selected Price(s)" from the popup menu. Then, FM will only do the retrieve for the specified investment(s).

Thanks,
Mark
