: : I am a newbie to Fund Mgr. having used the Fairshares (UK) software for many years.
: : In setting up my portfolio on FM I am using the historical prices download from
: : the Yahoo Historical server. I have held some of my stocks since 1996 and find the Yahoo server does not hold data this far back, also some of the data is just plain wrong when I compare with the Fairshares price history.
: : How can I be sure that historical data imports needed to transfer my portfolios to FM are accurate?

: Hi Pete,

: To verify the pricing data, you can use your web browser, and go to Yahoo Finance. Just go to http://finance.yahoo.com and look up the ticker symbol you're interested in. Click on the link to "Historical Prices" on the left. This is where Fund Manager grabs the data from when using either Yahoo (Historical or Yahoo (Adjusted Historical). The data in Fund Manager should match the data shown here. Please let me know if it doesn't. I'm not sure how to verify the data on Yahoo itself is correct. Also, please note there are 2 Yahoo historical servers, the regular one, and the "adjusted" one. Maybe you are using the "adjusted" one? Those prices are adjusted for distributions/splits, and would be different from the actual closing price on any prior date.

: If Yahoo Historical doesn't have the prices back far enough, you can try retrieving from MSN (Historical), or if you already have the data in Fairshares, maybe you can export it from there? Fund Manager could then import prices from this file using "File / Import / Prices / Generic...".

: Thanks,
: Mark

Hi Mark,

Many thanks for your answer, I tried the MSN (Historical) server as you suggested, adjusting the symbol to the MSN requirement and got perfect data for 2 stocks back to 1996, which fully agree with the Fairshares data. The Yahoo server does not seem to be as good. I could not export the data in the required format from Fairshares.
So far Fund Manager is looking pretty good - I will continue climbing the learning curve!

Thanks again,

Pete
