distribution, no shares owned

I hate to have to ask you this. Others have asked but the answer has never been clear enough for me.

Sometimes when I'm tracking a fund just for performance, I need to enter a distribution if the adjusted historical download fails to adjust for it. It happens now and then. What I'm given from the fund is the per share short term gain and the per-share long term gain. Theres no share (0) owned in the fund. Is there a way to make the adjustment to the NAV so that no share owned shows up after its done?

Could you give as much detail to do this as you can?. I managed to do this in the past by trial and error but I ended up having some shares owned as a result. This was a fund that I ended up owning and these fractional shares due to the distribution were a problem.
