Hi Edward,

Actually, this is a rather common thing to want to do. You can hide an investment by turning on its "Investment Properties... / Other / Hidden" attribute. You can control whether or not hidden investments are displayed in reports with the "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios" menu command.
