Re: Beg Value zero[ Message Board ] [ Archives ] [ Search ] Posted by Harry Teder on December 03, 2006 at 12:27:07: In Reply to: Re: Beg Value zero posted by Mark on December 02, 2006 at 12:21:22: : : : : Why does the Beg Value in my Portfolio Reports mostly/usually show zero?(no matter whether Earliest todate, or Year to date, or..). : : : Hi Harry, : : : The "Beginning Value" is the value as of the morning of the starting report date. This means it is the same as the close on the day prior to the report start date. If you made your first purchase on the beginning report date, this amount would not be reflected in the beginning value. Let me know if that doesn't help explain the problem. : : : Thanks, : : Well, that's kind of circular reasoning, without describing what the "same" is. I think it means the value of each investment as of the SRD. If the investment was sold before SRD, it appears as zero. If it was bought after the SRD, it also appears as zero. Is that correct? The FM has amazing capabilities but I seem to sometimes need the basics clarified. Thank you. Harry : Hi Harry, : An example might clarify what I meant... If you looked at the "End Value" on 12/31/05 this would be the same as the "Beginning Value" on 1/1/06. : If an investment was completely sold before the starting report date (SRD), then yes, the beginning value would be $0. : If you didn't own any shares before the SRD, and it was bought on or after the SRD, the beginning value would still be $0. : If you owned shares as of the day before the SRD the beginning value would not be $0. : This may seem confusing, but there is a reason why this works like this. Reports are inclusive of everything that happens on the beginning and ending report dates. For example, if you wanted to look at a report for a certain date range, and wanted to see what you started with, how much you added, and what you ended with, you could look at the Beginning Value, Invested, and Ending Value, and all 3 of these would be consistent (End = Beg + Invested). : Thanks, Understood, thank you. I had assumed that B V meant the out-of-pocket money the investment began with, at any time during the specified time period, and did not realize it was tied to Report beginning date. Is there a way to see the Report that way (display the invested amount) ?
