General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi Mark,
I have one instrument which does not display data points, also if one moves the mouse over the graph the dates or values are not displayed in the investment gain graph.
Also if one tries to select a portion of the graph to display it does not open the block around the portion on the screen so that one can see what has been selected.
All the above seems to be working well in all other graphs.
Any suggestions?
All my other investments are working fine in the portfolio. This investment still has the problem even if I move it into a new portfolio with only this one investment in the portfolio.
How could I get a back up of the investment in a portfolio to you?
Regards. fundman247

Hi fundman247,
Have you tried reverting the X and Y axis to full scale to see if it is maybe an issue of being zoomed in too far? While viewing this graph, select 'r' on your keyboard to revert to full scale. If that doesn't help you can send me an investment file. Every investment is saved as its own investment (*.dat) file. You can find the location under "Investment Properties... / Statistics".

Hi Mark,
R makes no difference. By using a longer time everything is just slower. I do have a 19 year history and this one data file causes FM to be slower than if I had a portfolio open with over 20 investments all having a 10 year plus history.
This is a sudden problem with this one investment.
I will be e-mailing you the file shortly.

Hi fundman247,
I tested the file you sent with version 12. It appears you are still using an old version 10 of Fund Manager? It worked with version 12, but it was rather slow in updating the screen. You have nearly 6,000 trades in this one investment, which I believe is the reason it is slow. You said it is a rather sudden problem. I would have thought that if it was due to the volume of transactions it would have come on gradually. If you know of a time when this investment was fast in displaying, maybe you can do some tests by restoring that investment file from an automatic backup. Save your current file first, by doing a "File / Backup...". You can then restore various time points to see if/when it became suddenly slow, or if it was more gradual.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the feedback.
I am still using vers 10.8 and havent looked at the later versions yet as vers 10 does all I need.
I am sure it is related to the many transactions on the investment. I just wondered why it is so slow only in the gain graph and behaving normal on other graphs.
I have since checked other investments and found the right click to get to properties is slow in all those with many trades.
The reason why I only picked it up yesterday although as you indicated it should have become slower on a gradual basis is I normally choose my period in the price and dist graph as I can then see the trades at different prices and only go to the gain graph to see the current gain from the start.
What was strange is that the mouse movement is normal in the price graph but very slow in the gain graph.
May be my many trades is an indication of the limitation if one has a few thousand trades over time without trimming the price history to may be the last few years.
Lastly - if I want to trim the time to perhaps the last 5 years is there a easy way to get rid of the trades as well as prices cannot be deleted is there are trades on that specific date?
Due to the daily trades of the investment it is not practical to start a new investment and just import the prices as one will then still have to import the daily trades.
I just thought of exporting the trades and then deleting the earlier ones before importing it as I do daily from a generic import.
Am I right that I can use the following export string ED SYMB TRAN ANUM BNUM CNUM?

Hi fundman247,
Thanks for the additional information. Yes, the Gain graph is much more compute intensive than the price or price + dist. graphs. We may be able to look into some optimizations, but it will be slower.
If you wanted to trim down your investment, use the Data Register. In there you can select a whole range of transactions (select, hold down Shift, and select other end of range to select) and delete them all at once. Once you delete the transactions, you can delete the prices this same way. The prices are not what would cause the slowness in this case though, it is the transactions. You could also copy/paste the last few years into a new investment if you want, and leave the original in place. You can copy/paste transactions across investments using the Data Register. This is much easier than exporting/importing.

Hi Mark, Thanks for the tip of using the data register. As a user for over 20 years and using it every day I feel I can kick myself for never trying to use the shift to delete more than one transaction at a time. I have at times been in a position to delete over 20 transactions and have been deleting them 1 by 1 Just some junk info. I have a portfolio with about 180 instruments with some back testing information and it contains 152 000 transactions. Can never blame FM if it is slow Regards. fundman247
