Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager
by troscher » Thu Oct 02, 2014 10:21 am
Mark, I have not had any updated prices, sans two small stock holdings, since Sept 24th. Updated quote server on Monday. Get error saying MSN quote server was not able to retrieve this is for both stock and mutual funds. How do I bypass the MSN server? I have changed several times to Yahoo, bloomberg, etc, but when the program goes to retrieve prices I see the MSN server info in the download box. I have used this program since the early 90's and usually have had great success, but this problem has got me stumped.

Hi troscher,
There is a global default quote server, but you can override this quote server on a per-investment basis. The global setting is under "Options / Internet Settings...". The override on a per-investment basis is under "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve". You can also add the "Quote Server" field to the Portfolio Editor windows (View / List Columns...) so you can quickly see the quote server that will be used for each of your investments.

I had to go and change every investment to yahoo retrieve. MSN was not working for me for whatever reason No investments would update. I switched two to yahoo and they updated but the MSN retrieve failed. I had not done anything with the program in regard to settings changes. Still a mystery as to why (moneycentral) MSN update no longer works.

Hi troscher,
I see the same problem with the MSN quote server. We'll have to investigate, and most likely release an updated quote module.

Hi troscher,
After investigating, it looks like we may just remove the MSN server from our list of supported servers. They no longer lend themselves to supporting stocks, indices, and funds. There are alternative servers available for these quotes. If there was something on MSN that you can't find on any other server, please let us know, and we can reconsider.

That means having a different default server I guess. Is that something you have to do with a program update? I have 25 different portfolios that I track for my investment clients and going through and changing each stock one at a time is a pain in the ...

Hi troscher,
Just change the default globally under "Options / Internet Settings...". You only have to change it on a per-investment basis (Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve) if you want a particular investment to use something other than the default you've assigned under "Options / Internet Settings...".

When I change the default setting to Yahoo, Bloomberg etc. in internet settings, save and then go to update prices the update module shows MSN as the retrieve site and nothing updates. It seems the only way to get the stocks, mutual funds to update is if I go into each portfolio and physically change the update server. Since MSN no longer works can't you program a fix to remove MSN and have another module be the new default? Tim

Hi Tim,
The "Options / Internet Settings..." sets your "default" quote server. Normally all your investments are set under "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve" to use the "<default server>", but if you've overridden it to use a specific quote server (like MSN), you'll need to change it in the investment's properties.
You can set the value for quote server that new investments get by default under "Options / Internet Settings... / New Investment Defaults...". When you create a new investment, these settings control what quote server that new investment will default to. Normally this is the "<default server>".
There is no way to globally reset all the investment properties for which quote server to retrieve from. This might be a good option for us to add in the future, thanks for the feedback.
