Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.
by SHAREVJ » Tue Dec 02, 2014 6:57 am
I am using fundmanager personal edition.
In Investment report, when I select period to start from "Earliest Transaction date", it is taking the oldest transaction date of all the underlying stocks and Interpolating the "Beg Nav". Is there anyway that I can specify to use the respective stock's "Earliest Transaction date" and avoid this interpolation. This will be useful understand the true gain I have got out of each stock investment.

Hi SHAREVJ,
In the "Investment Performance" report, the report start date is the same for every item in the report. You might consider creating a Custom report, and adding one of the "inception" based fields, like:
Gain (inception)
This shows the OOP gain since the first transaction of each line item. There are many other similar type "inception" fields you can choose from.

Hello Mark,
Alas, since I am using personal edition, I don't have the privilege of custom report or custom fields. Is there anyway to get custom report in personal edition? Please help.
Regards

Hi SHAREVJ,
Yes, the Custom report with all the built-in custom fields is available in all versions, including the Personal version. I suspect you are thinking of writing user-defined fields for the Custom report, which is not available in the Personal version, but you can still use the Custom report, and select from hundreds of built-in fields, including the ones I mentioned in my last post. See "Reports / Custom... / Custom Settings..." and then pick the fields you want in your Custom report.

Hello Mark,
You are right. I tried using custom report as advised by you. However, when I used "Beg NAV" field and selected "Earliest transaction date" as start date, it is interpolating the nav since the report takes oldest "Earliest Transaction". For example, for the following example,
Name : Earliest Transaction Date : Beginning Nav Stock A : 01-Jan-2007 : 102 Stock B : 10-Mar-2008 : 300
the report is not taking the "Beg Nav" of Stock B as 300 instead it is taking the interpolated value from price date and displaying.
What I am looking for is to have the beginning Nav to be 300.
Will this be possible. This is similar to the investment overlay report which I was asking for. There should be an option when I select it should take relevant "Earliest transaction date" of each stock than taking the oldest transaction of the oldest stock. REgards

Hi SHAREVJ,
The "Beg NAV" field is just the share price as of the beginning report date. The beginning report date doesn't vary by investment, it is the same for all investments. You had originally mentioned finding the gain for each investment. This is why I mentioned using:
Gain (inception)
Notice, there are several fields with "(inception)" in their name. This means that the figure is calculated back to the first transaction in that particular investment.
If you're trying to see the purchase price, and current price, you might consider using an "Open Lots" report instead. See "Options / Report Preferences... / Open Lots" to select which fields you would like to see. The Open Lots report lists each open lot on a line, instead of listing by investment, as in many of the other reports.
