Historical Prices - Fastest Server

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby dellwo » Fri May 29, 2015 11:10 am

Just wondering if you can recommend which server is faster for historical prices. I've always used Yahoo(historical) but it takes such a long time (seems worse lately). I just tried Google, but it's about the same.

There are so many to try, I was hoping someone had already found the fastest.

Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe,

I don't think there is one that is significantly faster than others. We did recently make a change relating to Yahoo (Historical), when you are using it with the Pro/Advisor version and retrieve dividends. It will make 2 passes, one for prices/splits, and then another for distributions since the distributions are split adjusted. If you don't retrieve distributions, it will be faster.

Are you using this to retrieve historical prices for new investments? It isn't necessary to retrieve historical prices for an existing investment once you already have historical data. You can retrieve for only a selected set of investments by selecting them in the Portfolio Editor, right clicking and choosing to retrieve "selected" historical prices.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks, it's no big deal.

I'm using the Personal edition. I just periodically update historical to catch any days I missed. Sometimes just the previous day, sometimes months to make sure all prices are updated.

It just seemed odd that updating Transactions is faster when it has to log in to several personal accounts but Historical takes nearly 2 minutes to get one day's data from Yahoo.

Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe,

The Yahoo (Historical) server does one symbol at a time, so it takes many more connections if you have a lot of investments...
Thanks,
Mark
