Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Clark » Tue Jun 16, 2015 7:39 am

Hi Mark

I have a small problem which I just noticed today that I hope you can help me with.

I have a purchase and redemption of investment XYZ that is only showing on the cash side of the transactions.

In 12/2013 money left the cash account (Memo says to puchase XYZ) and in 12/2014 money went into the cash account (Memo says Sold XYZ). No corresponding transactions in XYZ.

When I go to View/Hidden Investments XYZ does not show up.

It's as if investment XYZ has disappeared.

There is a XYZ_X83394246.dat file.

How do I recover from this?

Clark

Hi Clark,

It sounds like that investment got closed somehow. You can re-open it from the hard drive by right mouse clicking on the desired sub-portfolio and choosing "Open Investment(s)...". If it is already open, you'll get a warning.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Clark,

Sounds like that file isn't usable. You can see if you can find it from an old backup. You can restore just this one investment file. If you have your own backups, you can use those. Fund Manager also makes automatic backups, and by default keeps 30 revisions. See "Options / General Preferences... / Data" for the automatic backup location. Use "File / Restore..." to pick a backup file that may have contained that investment. When you choose a backup file you will see a listing of all the investments that were in there. You can select just this one, and choose to only restore selected items. You would not want to restore everything, as that would overwrite your recent changes.
Thanks,
Mark

I've had the same problem.

Suddenly, an investment has gone missing. The .dat file is still there on the drive but it's not listed on Portfolio Editor. It is 0 bytes in size. When I try to open it FM says it was is in an earlier format and asks if I want to convert it.

The only way I caught that this one was gone was I saw that the portfolio value had decreased.

I have managed to restore an autobackup. Must say, you fellows do a pretty thorough job.

But what's going on here. Cannot be having investments suddenly up and disappearing without a trace.

Hi El Wealtho,

I'm not sure what happened. It is difficult to say without being able to reproduce the problem. It is not normal to have an investment closed without the user closing it. Typically you never need to close any investments, just hide them if they're sold. I would suggest keeping an eye on it, and if you can somehow reproduce this problem, or it happens more often such that we can get an idea of when/how it is happening, then we can hopefully figure out what is going on.
Thanks,
Mark
