User Moves to a Different Country (w/ Different Currency)...

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby El Wealtho » Thu Jul 16, 2015 9:32 pm

Hmmm ...

Had everything set up fine (currency exchange rate impact for investments in various currencies) and was reporting gains and losses in default currency CAD.

User moves to USA and USD. Now investment and portfolio performance must be reported in terms of USD, though all investments remain, of course, in their respective currencies.

Have been messing around with currency templates and changing the default currency, which seems to result in the investments having their respective currencies changed to the new default. And other issues begin to arise.

Before I muddle further ... is there an obvious method to change to reporting results in a different currency?

Hi El Wealtho,

In order to be able to have multiple default currencies you do want to use currency templates. When using currency templates you can't have any of your investments assigned directly to the default currency (top one in the drop-down list in Investment Properties... and the "Default Currency" position in the "Options / Currency Settings..." dialog). This is because you're changing the default currency with the templates. You would keep currencies 2-24 fixed, and just change the exchange rates and the default currency. Every investment would be assigned to one of the 2-24 slots. Please note, if you have an investment now assigned to Currency 3 and you change the symbol and exchange rate of this currency in Currency Settings... that investment is still assigned to the Currency 3 position. To read all about how to use currency templates, see:

Cannot seem to get the Currency Templates to save.

I've altered a template by using position 1 as the default (C$) and changing one of the positions below to CAD (from CHF). Each affected investment has also had its assigned currency altered to CAD.

But FM keeps reverting back to the old default currency (which was CAD, in position 1) and CHF. i.e. Investments now show with currency CHF (rather than the new CAD), and clicking the currency exchange button now produces CAD (rather than the new C$).

In fact, a new currency template, which displays and may be selected using F11, ALSO has not saved. It is exactly the same as the template upon which it was modelled.

Saving, even closing FM (with auto-backup) and re-opening has not saved the new currency templates ...

Hi El Wealtho,

When is FM reverting back to your old settings? Your portfolio file (*.mm4) stores your currency settings, so when you first open your portfolio file, it will set your currency values to how they were when you last saved your portfolio. You should however then be able to switch to any different currency template you've saved. If you want to change the default currency settings, so you don't have to actually switch currency templates, change to the template you want, and then use "File / Save Portfolio".
Thanks,
Mark

This is proving quite difficult to describe ...

I now have two templates - call them T1 and T2.

I delete T2, select T1, make alterations, go to the investments, all seems fine.

I click Save Portfolio.

I create a new T2 and Select it. Again, I go to the investments and all seems fine. I click Save Portfolio.

Now try to switch back to T1. Currency Settings > Template ... choose T1. T1 is back to its original state - i.e. prior to the alterations I have made to it above.

I select T2. It has the alterations that I made to T1! Go to the investments and they display as if I am using the altered T1.

Hi El Wealtho,

What exactly are you looking at in the investments to determine your currency settings? Nothing in the Investment Properties... will be different when changing templates using the recommended method. No currency symbol 2-25 should change. Only the default currency symbol and your exchange rate settings should change. To determine if your template settings are as you expect you should look under "Options / Currency Settings...". Those are the settings saved with currency templates. Please try reading this section of the help again:

https://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/hel ... _Templates

and if you're still having troubles, it might be worth giving us a call. We can try doing a quick web meeting and looking at it together.
Thanks,
Mark

The altered "Symbols" in the Currency Settings box will not save. My most recent post describes it precisely and I don't think I can improve upon this!

I have read the help file again.

What's a "web meeting" and how does one do this?

Oh ... let me add this: I have changed the currency assignations of the investments in only one sub-portfolio, as that is all I am working with at this point. Would that have any effect ...

Hi El Wealtho,

A "web meeting" is where I can connect into your PC, and we can work together on your computer. This makes it much easier to figure out problems like this. Please give me a call at the office tomorrow, or whenever you have a few minutes, and we can do this web meeting. I'm sure we will get it straightened out quickly once we can both see the same thing.
Thanks,
Mark
