Fund Manager with Upcoming Windows 10

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Mark,

Windows 10 is coming in 3 weeks. Have you tested Fund Manager with it? Can we expect no issues for Fund Manager (the two supported versions) after we upgrade from windows 8.1 to 10?

I hope the new Win 10 browser is not going to cause issues retrieving quotes. Thanks.

Hi Tom,

We have not tested Fund Manager with Windows 10 yet. I don't anticipate any major issues, but we will be testing it as soon as Windows 10 is released officially.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

I have upgraded my machine with Windows 8.1 Home to Windows 10 Home this afternoon. My FM 12.x version is running fine without any problem so far. there are no issues retrieving transactions from my brokerage accounts and quotes and quote servers.

Hi Mark,

I upgraded to Windows 10, too, but am having a problem retrieving transactions from my broker. I am getting this error message:

Could not open log file for writing:
c:\Users\[My Name]\AppData\Roaming\Fund Manager\ofxpost.txt

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi aviator,

If you go to that folder using Windows Explorer, do you already have an "ofxpost.txt" file? Try deleting it. All the files in this folder are log files, and you can delete them. There may be a permission problem, and deleting it may resolve the issue.

Please note, the "AppData" folder is hidden, so make sure you're displaying hidden files/folders in the Explorer window.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Found the log file and deleted it. The message now says "Could not open log file for writing:" (with the same path as before.)

Hi aviator,

You might try this:

1) Exit Fund Manager
2) Rename the folder:
c:\Users\[My Name]\AppData\Roaming\Fund Manager
to
c:\Users\[My Name]\AppData\Roaming\FMOld
3) Re-start Fund Manager and try it again.

Maybe the folder has a permission problem, and deleting it, will cause Fund Manager to recreate it the next time it starts. If everything works, you can delete that FMOld folder.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks, Mark, I'll try that. I'm on the East Coast and am running late to meet family for lunch. Will try this when I get back this afternoon and, of course, will let you know the outcome. Thanks for your prompt replies.

Hi Mark,

Just tried what you suggested (after renaming the folder to FMOld) and got the following error:

"ERROR: Unable to create application data folder"

Thanks.

Hi aviator,

It sounds like there is a permissions problem. This may have happened during the Win 10 upgrade, but I don't think it is normal. I don't see that same problem here under Windows 10.

Here are a few ideas I could suggest to figure out what is wrong:

1) Try creating a new admin user in Windows, install FM as that user, and see if you have the same issue with this new user. You can just open up some sample portfolio and do an internet retrieve. That will test the ability of creating a log file as that user.

2) Try and fix the permission problem for your current user. If you look at the properties of the "Roaming" folder, and click on the "Security" tab, select your username, and check that you have "Full Control" permissions on this folder. If Fund Manager still fails to create the "Fund Manager" folder, see if you can do so manually.

3) Check the shortcut you're using to start FM, and make sure you aren't running in any compatibility mode and are not running it as an admin. You could try starting FM by just double clicking on the FM.exe file also.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
It very much was an issue of permissions. When I launched FM as Administrator, the downloads worked just as they always have. The ofxpost.txt file got created in a new Fund Manager folder, as you predicted.

Interestingly, when I attempt to retrieve transactions as just me, I get the error message again. So I'll need to check those folders and grant appropriate permissions.

Hi Mark,

For some reason I'm having a hard time granting "all" privileges to the Fund Manager folder. I believe the problem is actually with a folder at a higher level (AppData), which is cascading down to the FM folder. The AppData attributes show a blacked-out box for read-only (not a check mark) which, I believe, means some (but not all) of the sub-folders are read-only. No matter how I try, including creating and using another user, that box remains blacked out.

Is there a way to have Fund Manager point to a different folder other than the one I can't seem to change?

Hi aviator,

You can't change this location. FM queries Windows for where it should save such log files, and this is where Windows says to store them.

On my system, the "AppData" also shows the gray check for "Read-Only". I think that is typical, and that just means that some file within the folder somewhere is marked as "Read-Only". However, if you look on the "Security" tab, and select your username from the list, you should have a check mark in the "Allow" column for all the permissions.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

OK, got it, can't change the location.

What's maddening about this is it appears I've got full permissions for all folders, based on what I'm seeing in the security tab (even though the read-only attribute is greyed out).

I'd prefer not to have to run FM as administrator each time... do you have any suggestions?
