Cannot retrieve historical quotes

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Sheldon » Fri Aug 31, 2018 8:41 pm

Hi Mark,

I am using Program Version = 2018.15.3, Quote Module Version = 534.
I cannot retrieve historical quotes for MRCC, although I can retrieve the current
price using the Yahoo quote server. Here is a copy of the log:

Retrieve Started at 9/1/2018 03:16 UTC
Program Version = 2018.15.3
Quote Module Version = 534
Retrieving from server: (WALLSTREETJOURNAL-HISTORICAL)
Requested Historical Retrieve Dates: 8/30/2018 - 8/31/2018
Requesting: "MRCC"
WARNING - Unable to update: "MRCC"
WARNING: Server used but did not update any prices: (WALLSTREETJOURNAL-HISTORICAL)
Could not update any investments

I have also tried both Yahoo historical quote servers, but they didn't work either.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanx,
Sheldon

Hi Sheldon,

Try retrieving for more than 1 day. It may be that the historical server doesn't have the most recent price yet. I just test retrieved MRCC from both "Yahoo (Historical)" and "Wall Street Journal (Historical)" for the past month, and both historical servers updated correctly.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi again, Mark,
Following your reply, I found something very interesting.
Your suggestion to retrieve for more than one day still didn't work.
However, I also have a portable version of FM on a USB that I use when I travel.
When I did the retrieve on the USB version, it worked! I attribute this to a
screw-up on my part when I did the last FM upgrade on my desktop. The USB
upgrade went fine. I also notice a few other features that work fine on the USB
version but not on the desktop version. Is there any simple way that I could get
my desktop version to work like the USB version? If not, I assume that an uninstal
followed by a re-instal would be the only other alternative. If I go this route,
would my current license key still be valid? Also, I assume that I would lose all
my settings doing this. Would there be any way to save them?

Thanx for your help,
Sheldon

Hi Sheldon,

You can run a backup on one system, and do a restore on the other. See this. This will copy over all your settings/preferences. It really shouldn't be necessary to uninstall and re-install the software.

Are you only having trouble retrieving the historical prices for this one investment? Could you double check the symbol, and make sure it doesn't have any white space characters? Please also look at all the properties under "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve", including the "Advanced..." options.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

After following the procedure you suggested, I had mixed success.
BTW, the same problem exists for some other investments using
US-based Historical quote servers.

I am now able to successfully retrieve historical quotes using
the Wall Street Journal Historical quote server, but when I tried
using either of the Yahoo historical quote servers, it didn't work.

Investment Properties/Internet Retrieve fields are:
Retrieve Price: Checked
Quote Server: Yahoo
Historical Quote Server: Yahoo (Historical)
Invert Retrieved Price: Unchecked
Multiply Retrieved Price By: 1.0
Update Price when Retrieving Transactions: Checked
There is nothing checked in "Advanced Options".

Hi Sheldon,

Did you change anything in order for the WSJ Historical server to start working?

Hi Mark,

Yes, I changed the Investment type from "Exchange Traded Fund"
to "Stock". I also checked a number of other stocks/ETF's that were
historically retrieved using WSJ Historical quote server, and found
that many of them had the wrong Investment Type, When corrected,
all worked fine. I also tried retrieving the same ones with both Yahoo Historical
quote servers, but they failed. However, Yahoo current day Quote
server worked fine.

I checked Internet Explorer. The Security level in the Privacy tab
was set to Medium.

Thanx,
Sheldon

Hi Sheldon,

Yes, the WSJ server requires the "Investment Type" be set properly on your investments. When you retrieve from Yahoo (Historical) are you selecting a valid date range? For example, if you select from Aug 1 to today, does that allow it to start working? If you select just the current date for example, sometimes they don't have current pricing on the historical server, so it can fail. If it still doesn't work when using a longer date range, please post or email me both of the price retrieve logs from "Help / Logs".
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Sheldon,

Can you try using Internet Explorer (it must be IE, and not any other web browser) to Yahoo Finance and look up the historical prices for this symbol? Can you view them in IE? If so, please try the retrieve again after this.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I followed your advice and was able to view the historical prices for MRCC
using Internet Explorer. I then tried a historical retrieve using the Yahoo
(Historical) quote server, but again, failed.

Sheldon
PS:
Do you think the problem could be a wrong
setting in the Registry?

Can you please email me the "Detailed..." price retrieve log right after this failed retrieve?
Thanks,

Hi again, Mark,
I may have not posted the log info you asked for in my prior submission.

I tried to include the detailed log here and also tried to attach it but
it got rejected both times for being too large. I'll send it to you by email.
