Notes manager

Comments, critical feedback, praise, or suggestions for new features.

Hi Mark,

It would be great to have a tool / dialog directly in Fund Manager to display and edit all the investments notes of the opened investments, in a unique location.

This would be the dedicated place where we could follow our ideas, analyses, strategies, reminders...

Another suggestion would be the ability to create global notes, not attached to a particular investments but attached to the master portfolio. Notes related to events, global strategies, psychology, mindset and rules, todo tasks, etc...

This would be a big improvement to have this directly in Fund Manager. Investors / traders are constantly playing with ideas and notes.

Thanks.

Hi Djobydjoba,

Have you seen the existing "Notes" feature? You can record notes on your investments. Right click on an investment, and choose "Investment Data / Notes...". You can have an unlimited number of notes, and they are dated. There are "note markers" that appear on graphs as well.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Yes, I've seen the Notes. I think the current note system is well suited for this:

- notes to describe an action / transaction we've made at a specific date. Description of the action we've made, the reasons, the motivations for having done it. For example: why I've bought or sold that day.

- notes to link an event to the investment at a specific date. The note can help to understand the price behavior that day. For example: that day it was a FED FOMC, that day an earning report, that day a geopolitical event..

But the notes don't suit the other needs:

- Because a specific date has to be entered, it is not suited for notes for actions "in the future", "soon", "maybe", "if this happens", "to remember", "to watch closely"...

- Because the note has to be entered for a specific investment, it is not suited for notes about global markets, global strategies, global coming events...

The current implementation is a good start and could be extended while remaining quite simple:

- Possibility to create global notes, associated to the portfolio file and not to a specific investment.

- A central list (notes aggregator / notes manager) to display and edit the global notes. Optionally, investments notes could be displayed / managed in this list too (an option "display in central list" available for each investment note). For example, we wouldn't want to display in this central list the notes describing past transactions or events related to the investment (the type of notes that suits the current implementation), but only notes for actions we will possibly have to take on the investment in the future (soon, maybe, if this happens, to remember, etc.)

- An additional field "Title" for the notes, to describe and categorize the note (could be for example: "Coming event", "Be careful", "Interesting to buy?", "Make or break", "Sell soon"...)

- Perhaps the date field not always mandatory, because not suited for many notes.

We could consider it's not the purpose of a portfolio management software to offer notes management features like these. After all, there are plenty of software to manage notes, todolist, etc. I disagree. As investors / traders, we are constantly playing with many ideas and strategies. We have to make plans, we have to stick to our plans or to change them, we have to remember why we have bought, when we will have to sell, what will be the next move, what will be the next opportunity, the next risk. So an notes (ideas) management system is not accessory, it's at the core of the investment/trading discipline, and a key component for success.

Hi Mark, adding to Djobydjoba and as a starter, would it be possible to add a Marker to the investment Name in Portfolio Editor to remind us when we have notes associated with it? Similar to the red triangle when you add comments on an Excel cell?

Thanks,

Oscar
