What exactly does it mean to “close” an investment?

Is the data file deleted?

Is it just removed from the current portfolio?

Will the investment appear in a historical report that includes a period before it was closed?

Can it be re-opened in the same portfolio if I later purchase new shares in it?

When you close an investment, it is removed from the sub-portfolio. It is not deleted off your hard drive. The investment *.dat file still remains on your drive, but it isn't open, or used in any calculations. So, no, it won't appear in any historical reports. Yes, you could re-open it using "File / Open Investment(s)...", or right clicking on a sub-portfolio, and choosing "Open Investment(s)...".

It is usually recommended to "hide" an investment if you no longer own shares in it. This way it remains in your historical records. You can also easily view it again by turning on "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios". We have a tutorial on hiding investments.

If an investment is "hidden" will it still appear in an historical report?

What I really want is for investments with no current holding NOT to appear in the Investment Stack, but to turn up in any historical report that includes a period with non-zero holdings.

If an investment is hidden, it won't be listed as a line item in a report that is listing by investment, unless:

1) You have "View / Hidden Investments/Portfolios" turned on
2) You have "Options / Report Preferences... / General / Display Investments with Activity" turned on, and the hidden investment had activity within the date range of the report.

The hidden investment will always be factored into totals for any sub-portfolio it belongs in.
