"Step Line" graph option feedback

Comments, critical feedback, praise, or suggestions for new features.

Mark,

Thanks very much for this new graph feature "Step line" in FM 2026. For someone who do graphical analysis like me, this is an incredible feature. The price movements, and price reversals, a so much easier to see at a glance, this is amazing. The reading of price movements is so cleared that I wonder if this is not even better than candles for technical analysis in absolute terms.

So, to me, if I had to keep only just one feature in this version, it would be this one. Fortunately I haven't to do so :-)

Anyway, I have one comment and one request on the feature (FM 2026 beta):

The request:
Don't apply step line style to graph elements other than the prices. In particular on moving averages, Bollinger Bands, etc.
Those elements are smoothed by definition, very small variations between each step, so no benefit. It makes just the rendering not good on those elements by adding aliasing.

The comment:
This feature deserves to be highlighted (eg. for example, on the page listing the software's functions). The feature is lost among the other graph options of lesser importance, it would be a pity if people who might be interested weren't informed that it exists.

This feature is not widespread even on the dedicated trading plateforms (but TradingView). It could be of great interest to anyone involved in graphical analysis. So it's also a feature to be considered alongside the other software's technical analysis functions.

Hi Djobydjoba,

Glad you like this new feature, thanks for the idea in the first place. Understood about the moving averages and Bollinger Bands. We'll change it so those items are always drawn without this style. Thanks for the comment as well.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

An issue: when Step Line is on, in some cases the graph can redraw the graph several times. It may occur when a VERY large price range is chosen (e.i. more than 40 years). It can occurs too with slightly narrower price ranges (but still large) with the 4 graph display.

The problem doesn't appear with Step Line off.

Graph display with Step Line is on seems to consume more computing resources, and the display is slower to build up for large price range. Which seems logical (two segments to draw instead of one for each price).

Hi Djobydjoba,

I wasn't able to reproduce this redraw issue here... Maybe you could email me an investment, and some graph settings to reproduce this here? I wouldn't expect this option to consume more compute resources.
Thanks,
Mark
