General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

I just started using an evaluation copy of FM, imported my QIF files and after playing with the result decided that I wanted to wipe out everything I imported and start from scratch.

Thought I'd figured this out -- went to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Bosley\My Documents\Fund Manager

and deleted all files, then went to the Autoback [C:\Documents and Settings\Bosley\My Documents\Fund Manager\Autoback] folder and did the same.

When I re-imported my QIF files using a new Portfolio name[bosinvest], the old 'test' Portfolio name [I'd called the original Portfolio 'test'] was back.

What am I missing here?

Hi Bob,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I somehow missed your post...

Where were you seeing the old 'test' portfolio name? If you're just seeing it at the bottom of the "File" menu, this doesn't mean the file still exists. Those are just the most recently opened portfolios. If you are seeing the test.mm4 file show up again on your hard drive, after you deleted it, maybe you still had it open in Fund Manager when you deleted it, and when you exited the autosave re-saved the file?

I am trying out the best way to import my data so after doing a Generic Transaction Import, i wanted to start over. I 'deleted' all investments in a portfolio, but it looks like it just 'closed' them, so when i imported them all again, it made duplicate .dat files for each investment.

I want to delete all investments (or at least all transactions for each investment) but i can't figure out how.

- I tried deleting all dat files, but the investments still showed up in the portfolio.
- I tried deleting each transaction individually, but it kept saying it couldn't delete anything with a price point of 0 (or something like that).

What's the best way to delete all transactions permanently from the whole portfolio - or whole sub-portfolio?

How do i stop an import from creating a separate dat file each time i import? (Did closing the first set of imported investments in the portfolio editor prior to a second import cause this problem?)

Hi Jim,

Closing investments within Fund Manager does not delete their *.dat files off your hard drive. They are still files, but just not open/used in Fund Manager. If you don't want these files anymore, you have to use Windows to go delete them off your hard drive. To wipe out everything, you can do this:

1) File / Close Portfolio from within Fund Manager
2) Use "Windows Explorer" or "My Computer" to go delete all your *.dat and *.mm4 data files. Normally these are in "My Documents\Fund Manager", unless you specified to save them somewhere else. If you're not sure where your data files are located, look up their location using the Portfolio Editor before closing them in Fund Manager.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the info.

How do i stop duplicate .dat files from being created each time i import transactions from a csv file? (eg: MU.dat, MU1.dat, MU2.dat, etc) did it do that because i had closed the investments and then imported? I was hoping any MU transactions could just be added to the existing dat file. especially if i re-do anything I don't want multiple transactions to show up.

When you import, do not check the option to "Import All Transactions Into Specified Investment". If you do this, all transactions are forced into that one investment, no matter what. If you leave this option off, then all transactions will be put into any open investment with a matching symbol. If you don't have the investments open in Fund Manager when you do the import, they won't update existing .dat files. They have to be open in order to be updated. As long as they have the same symbol and are open, the existing investments will be updated, instead of creating new investments.

Yes, but you should 'close' that investment in Fund Manager first. Closing an investment in Fund Manager does not delete the file off your hard drive, but it is not being used when it is closed.

Hi Mark -- I am remiss for not responding more promptly that the deletion process that I described worked just fine once I verified that FM was closed.

I appreciate your assistance with this and see in the interim that the thread continues to generate some interest.

We're continuing to work our way through some import anomalies [of our own creation, I'm sure] where some identical investments in separate IRA accounts were mingled when we created the QIF file in Quicken to import into FM.

After some additional study of this and some other threads as well as more reading in the Tutorial, we believe that we have a resolution in sight.

Yes he's back,
still messing with FM and the ONE folio that apparently by default is THE "main historical portfolio" since I M still working with an upgrade that never has been 'upgraded' to the New system (like from what 5 yrs ago?).

So, just today, by megacoincidence, I jumped to your site as a relief from fighting with TTax 07, and decided to really make the change.

Think in mid process that within your nicely graphic tutorial I quickly became both mentally and visually blinded by the MANY MANY reference terms and .DAT references.

What he said was the tutorial became a plethora of words with emphasized file extensions, and in my leedle mind did NOT clarify what to do, without becoming embroiled in alphabet soup!

This coincidental thread ( I yust signed into FM since I got a new ver.notice today and wanted to see what the posts were reading like).

So you can still color me Still Confused by your old new system!
