Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Ivan » Fri Dec 03, 2010 12:02 am

I am setting up Fund Manager to track my investments and have manually entered all relevant transactions. I am now wondering about the standard way to maintain price data. My best guess is that I would download historical prices for each investment from at least its oldest transaction date to the present by right clicking it and entering that date range. Then I would maintain them, say weekly, by selecting the master portfolio and updating historical prices with a date range of the last week. Is this the way it is normally done?

Thanks,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,

I'm sure there are many acceptable ways of updating your prices. I would suggest just retrieving historical prices once for all your holdings. Retrieve back to the earliest date you want, like maybe the inception of your whole portfolio. It isn't necessary to do one investment at a time, although you can do this if you want. It doesn't hurt to have closing prices for an investment before you owned it.

Once you get closing prices, going forward, you can do as you described, or if you use the program frequently, just click the price retrieve button each day. If you feel like an advanced user you can even set up a scheduled task in Windows to run Fund Manager using the command line arguments to retrieve prices and then quit.
Thanks,
Mark
