Spurious Transactions for one investment

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby red_puppy » Tue Jan 25, 2011 7:51 pm

Hi -
I am using FM 10.9 to track a Vanguard portfolio consisting of several mutual fund investments. The portfolio contains one investment, Total Stock Market Index Investor VTSMX that keeps getting spurious transactions every time I do an Internet retrieve of transactions. This is odd for several reasons: these spurious transactions appear to be the exact inverse of the transactions that occur in the rest of the portfolio. It is almost is if this investment is the source of capital for the other investments, because every time some of the other investments are bought, the apparent holding in VTSMX goes more negative. It is also odd, but perhaps diagnostic, that I no longer do any transactions on this investment because in October 2010 I converted all the shares of VTSMX to Admiral shares VTSAX. It was after this conversion that the spurious transactions started to be noted. I have once deleted all the spurious transactions after the conversion, but today again I am seeing more spurious transactions in VTSMX after Internet retrieve of transactions.

The straight forward way to solve this might be to simply delete the now dormant VTSMX investment from the portfolio but I would then lose part of the historic picture of value in the portfolio. I would appreciate any advice on how to solve this odd problem. Thanks!

Hi red_puppy,

It sounds like you've somehow assigned this investment to be your "default cash account" for the sub-portfolio. Right mouse click on the sub-portfolio, and choose "Properties..." and check what you have assigned for the default cash account. It sounds like you would want to change it to "<None>".
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark -
Your suspicion that I had assigned VTSMX as default cash account for the portfolio was correct. I don't recall setting it to that, but somehow it happened... I have now set the default cash account for this sub-portfolio to 'None' as you suggested. Thank you for the quick and helpful response.
