Transfer In/Out

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby HCPierce » Tue Mar 01, 2011 2:09 pm

In a particular grouping of funds and/or stocks with a cash account (cashbox.dat ?), cash often accumulates in a stock's .dat file due to sales of the stock or dividends, etc. I often want to move this cash to the cash account or to another stock's .dat file where it will be shown to be used to make a new purchase of this other stock. I suppose I'm not using Transfer in or Transfer out as designed but I don't seem to be able to get them to move cash from one .dat file to another .dat file. or a cashbox.dat file. Ideas, corrections, or instructions will be welcome.
I have used Transfer In/Out to move stocks from one portfolio or sub-portfolio to another.

Hi HCPierce,

Stocks do not have "cash". A stock is tracked as an investment, and cash is tracked as a separate investment. Often they are put together into a sub-portfolio for your account. If you have the cash investment assigned as your default cash account in the sub-portfolio, then whenever you buy, sell, or receive a distribution, that money will automatically come out of, or go into, that cash investment.

You can assign the default cash account for a sub-portfolio in the "Properties..." dialog of that sub-portfolio.

When you say "cash often accumulates in a stock's .dat file", where are you viewing this?
Thanks,
Mark
