Cloud-Based Setup

I just installed and tested it under Dropbox myself. I ran into the same issues. I believe it is a conflict with FM trying to read/write these log files while the Dropbox app is trying to sync them. If you temporarily turn off syncing that fixes the problem, at least it did for me. To pause syncing, click on the Dropbox icon and then the settings button, and choose "Pause syncing". When you are done, you can resume syncing again.
A better solution is to actually turn off syncing for this "Logs" folder. You can do this in Dropbox under "Settings / Preferences... / Advanced / Selective Sync / Switch to advanced view".
Ha! You nailed it! Problem solved. Thanks so much for your effort and patience. Very much appreciated.
Mark,
Thanks again for all of your help. For my Dropbox-based, cloud setup, I have everything directed to the same folder obviously (on both of my computers), but the path of getting to that file is different on both machines. This is causing the data file to have "multiple locations" when I start up FM after switching machines. It looks like FM creates a new folder in My Documents when I switch machines. Can you make any sense of this? Thanks, Mark
Hi Mark,
I assume you're looking at this "multiple locations" in the "File / File Operations / Set Data Location..." dialog? That definition factors in all the locations of your investments, portfolio file, plus also the directory where new investments are created by default. I'm guessing that for you everything except this new investment folder is the same. You can look at the location of all your investments/portfolio file in the Portfolio Editor using the "Location" field, or in a Custom report using the Path and filename field. You can find the directory for new investments by doing a transaction import or retrieve and clicking the "Options..." button next to "Create new investments as needed". Since your dropbox folder has a different path on these 2 machines, you may have a hard time getting the "new investment folder" to be the same, but as long as you leave on the option to "Use same folder as other investments in portfolio when possible", and you have everything else located in the same folder, all your new investments will also continue being added to this same folder.
Hi Mark (the moderator and the OP),
Sorry to intrude on this thread but all the talk of cloud-based FM intrigues me. Would love to have my data always backed up in the cloud, as well as accessible from other computers. Is there published documentation for migrating FM data to the cloud from my local drive? Thanks.
Hi aviator,
Yes, press the "Help" button from within "Options / General Preferences... / Data" to read the online help. In the section that talks about this feature is a link to more information on setting up portable mode. Or, you can just view this topic online here: http://fundmanagersoftware.com/help/portable.html
Thanks, Mark.
I followed the directions carefully, and have installed FM in Google Drive. But when I attempt a Price History retrieve, I get the following error message: Quote module is not digitally signed. Please re-install Fund Manager. I checked the cloud version for updates, and everything is up to date. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
Hi aviator,
If you go look at the properties of your inteng12x.dll file in the cloud, does it's digital signature say it is OK?
Hi aviator,
Hmm, not sure about this... I just set up a test on a Google drive and didn't run into this problem. If you copy the whole folder where you have FM installed on the Google drive to your hard drive, and then run it from there, do you get this same error?
Hi Mark,
It's obvious to me that I've done something wrong. I decided to start over by deleting the Google Drive folder I created for FM, and re-download FM and follow the instructions again. In between deleting the GD folder and re-downloading, I decided to update my accounts using the desktop version (i.e. local data instead of the cloud). I was surprised that my local data was also deleted. I always keep a local backup, so restoring was not a problem. I'll try this again in a few days when I have more time to figure it out. Thanks.
