Technical Analysis Dialog

This dialog is available from the Graphs / Options / Technical Analysis... menu command.  This command is only available in the Professional and Advisor versions of Fund Manager.

This dialog controls the type of data displayed on the Technical Analysis graph. There are 2 sections in this graph type, an upper and lower graph section.

Upper Graph:

Share Price Display:

<None>

no price information will be plotted

Close

single line plotting the closing share price

Candlestick

plots the open, close, low, and high information

Heikin-Ashi Candlestick

modified Candlestick

Indicator:
<None> no indicator will be plotted
Simple MA a single simple moving average will be plotted for the number of periods specified (a "period" is defined as a weekday with a recorded price, see technical comments below)
Simple MA (2 lines) two simple moving averages will be overlaid on the upper graph for the time periods specified
Simple MA (3 lines) three simple moving averages will be overlaid on the upper graph for the time periods specified
Exponential MA a single exponential moving average will be plotted for the number of periods specified
Exponential MA (2 lines) two exponential moving averages will be overlaid on the upper graph for the time periods specified
Exponential MA (3 lines) three exponential moving averages will be overlaid on the upper graph for the time periods specified
Bollinger Bands Bollinger Bands with your selected moving average type and duration, as well as the number of standard deviations for the upper/lower bands

Lower Graph:

Indicator:

<None>

no indicator will be plotted

Accumulation/Distribution

Accumulation/Distribution line will be plotted

Average True Range

Average True Range (ATR) line will be plotted
Chaikin Money Flow Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) will be plotted in bar chart format

Commodity Channel Index

Commodity Channel Index (CCI) line will be plotted. Horizontal bars are displayed at 100/-100 for reference.
MACD plots the Moving Average Convergence/Divergence using your specified long, short, and signal time periods. The difference in the MACD and its signal is plotted as vertical bars.
Money Flow Index Money Flow Index for the number of periods specified. Horizontal bars are displayed at 80/20 for reference.
On Balance Volume On Balance Volume (OBV) will be plotted
Relative Strength Index Relative Strength Index (RSI) for the number of periods specified. Horizontal bars are displayed at 70/30 for reference.
Stochastic Oscillator Full Stochastic Oscillator. Choose the number of periods for the %K calculation, the number of periods for the %K smoothing, and the number of periods for the %D calculation. The %K smoothing and the %D calculation are performed with a simple moving average. Using a %K smoothing value of 1 is also referred to as a "Fast Stochastic Oscillator". Using a %K smoothing value of 3 is also referred to as a "Slow Stochastic Oscillator". Horizontal bars are displayed at 80/20 for reference.
Volume The trading volume will be plotted
Williams %R Williams %R line is plotted. Horizontal bars are displayed at -20/-80 for reference.

Technical Comments on Simple Moving Averages:  The simple moving averages (SMA) in the Technical Analysis (TA) graph can differ slightly from moving averages elsewhere in Fund Manager when there are missing weekday prices.  The TA graph never interpolates missing data.  The TA graph will only plot a SMA data point when there is a price recorded on that date, and there are the required number of recorded data points to calculate a SMA before this date.  In the TA graph, SMA lengths are specified in "periods", where a period is a weekday with a recorded price.  A simple moving average is calculated by adding up the values for each recorded weekday price for the specified number of periods, starting from and working backwards from the calculation day, looking back as far as necessary to find the required number of recorded weekday prices.  The sum is divided by the total number of periods to obtain an average.  Moving averages elsewhere in Fund Manager are defined with "weeks", which would be equivalent to 5 periods if every weekday had a price recorded.  See the definition of Moving Average for an explanation of how the other moving averages in Fund Manager are calculated.
