Don't know if I understand your problem correctly, but try this:

Under options, check "save data on exit". If you can't see this choice, or you can't raise your menu high enough to see it, try increasing your screen resolution to 800 x 600. This will show you the entire menu.

Also, whenever you make any changes to a portfolio that you wish to save, under "file" select "save portfolio" before you select "exit".
