Here's some additional data:

With Fund Manager closed, if I click on one of the sample files (after associating .dat files with Fund Manager), it opens correctlly. Within Fund Manager, I can then open my individual stock or mutual fund data files correctly. However, if I then open my portfolio, the graphs are blank. Any further data files (sample or otherwise) that I then open are blank. If I close Fund Manager, I can repeat the process.

I suppose I should try recreating my portfolio file, which may in fact be corrupt.
