: 1) It gives you the ability to look at cumulative values for several sub-portfolios. For example:

: -Port A
: - Port B
: - Port C

: You could graph or report on Port A, and see the combination of Port B and Port C. You could accomplish the same thing with individual portfolio files (*.mm4), but then when you modify Port B or C you would also have to update Port A. With using sub-portfolios, the maintenance is much easier and automatic.

: 2) A single price retrieve will update all your open investments, so you only have to do it once.

i have set up the following
master portfolio
- name a
- port a1
- port a2
- port b

each port has 3 stocks
if i highlight 'name a' and ask for price retrieval it is retrieving port a1, port a2 *and* port b. plus i find that i can't look at just the stocks in port a1. if i click on a1, and close the editor to see the graphs, there are 9 graphs, including all 3 ports. doesn't seem like i can work with one port at a time. i presume the same will happen with reports. it seems the editor gives the opportunity to work on all investments at once, but removes the possibility of working on any group separately.

i have another question about the editor function. if i have 2 portfolios, both on the same 'level' . each set up to use a different 'default cash account". one stock is common to both ports. if i record a transaction for this stock will it reflect in both cash accounts simultaneously? or will i have to record the transaction in one port, then open the second and change it so it records again in the second cash account?
