: Hi Mark,

: I have read some archived messages on the bulletin board regarding mergers, but my question is still unanswered. How shall I record the acquisition of one company by another, when I have stock in both companies? Recording a split in the acquired company and then changing its name to that of the acquiring company will give me two separate files for the same stock. What do you suggest?

: Thanks.

Hi Shmuel,
Mergers can happen in different manners, sometimes for stock, sometimes
for cash. It sort of depends on how you want to track it. Since you
owned both of the companies you must have received stock or cash for
the one acquired. You can combine the two investments into one, by selling
out of one, and putting the shares into the other. It sort of depends on the
details of the merger...

Thanks,
Mark
