: Hi Mark,
: I'd like to make you aware of the difficulties I'm having with FM and retrieving transactions from my Vanguard account. Perhaps this will be an aid to tuning future FM versions for Vanguard quirks.

: My Vanguard acct. is an employer sponsored 401k. Perhaps this acct. type is handled differently from their brokerage accts.

: I am unable to retrieve any transactions from them no matter how I change the settings. (i.e., skip, date range, create new).
: If I download/save an ofx file of my transactions I can't import them either. I can however import positions from this same ofx file.
: If I do a reconcile on the Vanguard subportfolio it does automatically retrieve my positions from their server.

: The Vanguard website gives 2 options for downloading transaction files, either Quicken or MS Money. If I select Money type then it downloads/saves an ofx file. Vanguards download faq says that this file only contains positions which apparently is the way MS Money handles transactions too. This would explain why I can't import from it.
: If I select the Quicken option to download transactions then it creates a temporary qif file, FM automatically launches (because qif's are associated to FM) and the import transaction window opens and is pointed to the temp qif file.
: This second download method is the only way I can retrieve my transactions.

: Another quirk I've noticed when retrieving transactions via the Quicken qif file is that the number of shares is rounding the decimal places. It would appear that FM is rounding number of shares and share price based on the value instead of the other way around. I end up having to modify transaction entries by hundredths or thousandths in order to reconcile.
:
: I will email a copy of Vanguards download faq and an ofx file for you to review and consider.

: Regards,
: Mark Miller

Hi Mark,

I suspect the problem is related to it being a 401k account, as this doesn't sound normal for a broker or regular mutual fund account with Vanguard. The OFX file you sent me had no transactions in it, only positions. This is consistent with your observations of being able to retrieve positions, but not transactions.

If you look at the QIF file you're importing, do you see the correct share balances listed in the transactions?

Thanks,
Mark
