: : : Just upgraded to 7.0 thinking it solved my dilemna. Have studied documentation and message boards and can't find the solution though.

: : : I own the same mutual fund in different portfolios (IRA, regular, etc.). I have always kept each portfolio in its own directory -- I open the portfolio and update the prices of all the investments in each portfolio. And then go onto the next portfolio.

: : : It would be nice to just update prices once for all investments. In my view the price history is independent of the transaction history. So each portfolio would still know about only its own transactions but like investments in different portfolios would access the same price file.

: : : Does master portfolio do this?

: : : Thanks.

: :
: : Hi Oakey,

: : Yes, you can do this. For each fund you would create an investment file.
: : Each investment file can have the same symbol/name, but you would assign
: : them unique filenames. The default filename for an investment is the symbol,
: : but you can easily change that to anything you want, like:

: : JANSX_porta.dat
: : JANSX_portb.dat
: : JANSX_portc.dat

: : for example. These investments can be anywhere. You can store them all
: : in the same directory, or in different ones if you want. Just add them
: : each to their respective sub-portfolios in Fund Manager. When you do a
: : price retrieve all of them will get updated. For some detailed instructions
: : on working with and setting up sub-portfolios please see:

: I guess I write here.

: The whole point of updating the prices is so then I can look at one graph for each of my (now) sub-portfolios. That's basically all I do on a daily basis. Quick update the prices then quick view my 4 or so graphs, one for each portfolio.

: So now I get all prices with one click -- that's to the good. But when I double click on a portfolio nothing happens, so I think I have to go file open to open each portfolio one-by-one in turn. That's cumbersome. I want to just click through them.

: And even though I very carefully re-created the graph (overlaid investments, different starting dates) I wanted for each portfolio, they have now all scrambled.

: Let's say under Master Portfolio, I have sub's A, B and C. And B has two more sub's, let's say B1 and B2.

: I have opened portfolio B2 which had a nice graph saved with it (I thought) and the graph I see is the graph I saved for portfolio A. And the heading says: "Graphs - Portfolio B1.mm4 [Portfolio A]". If I open Portfolio A, no graph comes up though I very carefully composed one and saved everything and if I ask for a graph it sort of makes one up it likes.

: I'll wait for your answer and I'll do whatever you say and work on this about, say, another 3-4 hours (about what I have in so far on this update) and then if I am still lost and scrambled, I'd like my $22 refunded and how do I get back to FM6?

Hi Oakey,

You really shouldn't be using "File / Open Portfolio...". You just need
to set up a single portfolio file (*.mm4), and this will contain all your
sub-portfolios. To swich which sub-portfolio is being graphed in a portfolio
based graph (like Portfolio Value) you want to change the "Active Portfolio".
To do this from within the Graphs window, just choose "Investments / Set
Active Portfolio" and choose the sub-portfolio you want to graph. You
can also change the active sub-portfolio in the Portfolio Editor by
right mouse clicking on any sub-portfolio and choosing "Set as Active Portfolio"
from the popup menu.

If you decide you want to go back to 6.x a refund is no problem. Just let
me know. Also, you can download the final 6.x version here:

I do hope that once you get the hang of sub-portfolios you will see that
they are very powerful, and make managing your portfolios much easier.

Thanks,
Mark
